American Innovation ?

Has anybody else ever wondered why the reef community in the USA always seams to be a step behind the europeans when it comes to aquarium products and new husbandry techniques.
I just bought a German skimmer and I'm thinking about a German lighting system. It seams that a lot of people gain there inspiration from the european tanks and methods, often incorporating them into there own systems.
Is this a classic case of "the grass is always greener" or that the europeans are better designers, innovators and engineers.
Just a thought!
