BB on a 65gal??? Help me decide!!
Ok--I am in the process of taking down my big tank, but decided to keep a small 65gal RR tank running.
My question is I was thinking about trying a BB on this tank as i am sick and tired of my yellow-striped maroon clown blowing sand all over the place. I have had DSB's and SSB's in my last couple tanks, and although they have done well--I never seemed to get the nice, beautiful crisp white look that some other get. So--the tank will be a 65RR with a 20gal sump. I will be running a Octopus NW-150 skimmer which is a little over-sized, but I feed fairly heavy-so the larger skimmer should help. I have lots of LR left over from my big tank--so I should have the 65 pretty full. My question is if I don't do sand in this smaller tank--will I just be asking for a crash or problem? Not trying to start the whole DSB vs BB debate here, but I would like this tank to be simple and fairly low maintenance. I have a nice automated water-change system, so water-changes are going to be fairly easy and quick. I think my biggest frustration in the past has been the constant pain of trying to keep the sandbed looking nice. I also get frustrated with the constand standstorms every time I work in the tank. So....as long as I have a good amount of LR--do you feel the system will be stable? On a smaller tank would the benefits of a DSB out-weigh the cons?

Oh--and if i do go BB--is there some sort of cheap white-board material that I could get locally that I could use on the bottom of the tank?
I just don't want the rock to damage or crack the glass.

I have a 65G BB my rock sits right on the galss, and I have had no problems. I'll admit it does'nt look as nice as sand. I dont think there is any reason at all why going BB would make your tank crash. You need good flow on the bottom to keep the detrius from building up. Since you like to overfeed a bit, you wont have to worry about food particles decaying in the sand bed.
