hammers and brains

hi im new to the hobby and would like to know if my hammer coral could kill my green open brain. I came home today and my hammer coral was knocked over towards my brain and my brain had shrunk. Can someone please help me out???

I'm not sure which would kill which but I wouldn't leave them next to each other for long. Just give the brain some time, it should recover just fine. I have found they are plenty hardy.

It could certainly sting the brain, but I have a feeling the brain will be fine. It probably closed up more because of the physical contact with a hard object than the hammer actually stinging it. I've never had my hammer touch my open brain, but I've had other things fall on the brain with a similar reaction. Even if it has been stung, it should recover. These guys are pretty hardy as long as they're in a good environment.

Thanks for the info my brain is starting to look a little better but my crabs keep knocking over my gargonians and my hammer coral i think im going to get rid of them.

Have you tried some epoxy putty for the hammer coral? I'm not sure what would work best for the gorgonian. The epoxy would probably kill the portion it touches, but that probably wouldn't have any significant effect on the rest of the coral.

i have not tried the epoxy yet i need to get some but i think im just going to get rid f my crabs their to destructive for what im looking for

my green open brain somehow pushed its self off the rock i had placed him on and has made his way on to the substrate is this normal ive never heard of an open brain moving on its own ???

pretty sure they can't. must be another explanation. how long have you had the gorg? they're pretty tough to keep for long. the more colorful ones tend to be filter feeders and it's difficult to give them enough nutrient without fouling the tank.

ive had the gargonian for about a mpnth and a half now.I sat in my living room last night and watched my open brain push itself down on to the substrate mabey too much light i have a t5 with a blue actinic and a power compact above my refugium mabey the brain didnt like all that light

I had my brain on the rockwork just above the substrate for a while. Snails and crabs kept knocking it to the bottom until I got tired of sticking my hand in the tank to move it back. It's lived on the substrate since then. I was told by another reefer that the brains should be kept away from rock because the sharp edges will cut into the flesh of the coral when it expands.

Ive heard the same that they should be on the substrate i placed it back on the rock last night if it ends up on the substrate again i think i will just leave it alone
