Ok so after doing some reading I want a QT...

My buddy has a 10 gallon he will give me. What are the basics I need for this tank?

All you need is a power filter (sponge which you can throw away after qt, you can get replacements that you can seed in your sump) a heater, thermometer, and some pvc piping for the fish or whatever you have to hide.

Thats the basic setup i have.

Might want some eggcrate for a lid if you're qt'ing a jumper. You don't even need a light, really---the dim conditions help the fish relax.

Yes, also the sponge should be in there about 2-3 weeks to get the beneficial bacteria on it.

PVC or clay pots... something for the fish to hide in and provide surface for bacteria to grow on. The reason you don't use live rock in a QT is that if you have to medicate, you have to chuck anything that is in the tank when you're done.

The filter you use can be one of those cheap HOB filters that "do the job" but aren't all that great in the long term. They usually have some removable filter sleeve, usually with activated carbon in it. Stick one in your sump (or even your display if you can stand to look at it) for a week or so and it will develope the microscopic life that is needed for processing waste.
