Given how aggressive/territorial damsels are, I would stick with just one in that sized tank.

No problem with the mix; anthias require feeding multiple times per day. Barlett seem to convert all members to male in my experience. They can get ornery towards each other. Personally I prefer resplendent anthias.

35lbs or so fully cured marco live rock picked up locally from Premium Aquatics

My ultimate goal here is a mixed reef tank with zoas and rics, some LPS and SPS. Livestock wise I'm looking for pretty and relatively peaceful. I'd honestly rather watch a pistol shrimp excavate than a tang swim around endlessly. Looking for more interesting/rare critters, as money allows. This is my first tank. I plan on taking my time, and fortunately am a poor college student so I don't really have a choice in the matter.

Potential Fish
  • A pair of captive bred Banggai Cardinalfish (Pterapogon kauderni)

    Some sort of goby, considering:
  • Dracula Goby (Stonogobiops dracula)
  • Yasha Goby (Stonogobiops yasha)
  • Yellow Watchmen (Cryptocentrus cinctus)
  • Orange Spotted Goby (Amblyeleotris guttata)
  • Paired with a Red Banded Pistol Shrimp(Alpheus randalli)
  • A Firefish, haven't decided which of the three, think they are all pretty

How do these look/sound? Goby suggestions? I really, really like the draculas ever since I saw one in person, they're gorgeous. I would love a mandarin and/or a scooter blenny, but I realize long term success is really going to depend on if I can get them to eat frozen/pellet, and that it takes an established tank. Any other suggestions? Maybe a blenny of some sort? Suggestions? What order should I be purchasing these in?

Potential Inverts
  • Blood Shrimp (Lysmata debelius)
  • Peppermint Shrimp (Lysmata wurdemanni)
  • Skunk Cleaner Shrimp (Lysmata amboinensis)
  • Various feather dusters
  • Maybe a Pincushion Urchin (Mespilia globulus)
  • Some sort of clam

Thoughts? Blood shrimp vs. Peppermint Shrimp? Preferences? Thoughts on a small urchin?

Potential Cleaning Crew
I'm seriously considering picking up a mix of stuff from IPSF, as while the live rock I have is covered in coralline, it doesn't seem to be really chocked full of critters, though it is pretty loaded with copepods. Looking at mini stars, bristle worms and the like. Also planning on checking out Inland Aquatics since they are relatively local, as well as just seeing if I can con Jeremy at PA out of some stuff. We'll see. I'll probably place an order from reefcleaners.org as well. Specific suggestions would be great though.

So how does stuff look overall?

I appreciate any and all help.
In my experience, and from what I have heard, the Dracula Goby does not seem to do well. Any of the remainder should be terrific. All of the firefish are fun, but my personal favorite is the most expensive (sorry). Urchins can move things around as they move around. I personally would not recommend one. I have had excellent experience with Premium Aquatics but I am biased as I am in the one day ground area from them.

A lionfish also puts your fish at risk. Well if cost is no object, a candy basslet is gorgeous. A gramma loretto, while gorgeous is aggressive. However, I would opt for a colorful possum wrasse. Cryptic but very mysterious and interesting.

One at the MOST. I personally would opt for a possum wrasse. Cryptic but mysterious and hardy.

Tank will be a 40g long with a 10g sump. I wanted to do soft corals and the following fish:

Pair of clowns
Flame angel
Royal gramma

I'd also like some inverts like peppermint shrimp.

What type of clowns? Clowns can/will get fairly aggressive when/if they start spawning.

Is there a specific species of clown that might work better then others?

Sorry, but this is NOT correct. The LFS has them together and because they have no established territory, in the short run, they tolerate each other. In your tank, unless you get a bonded pair, any more than 1 will be reduced to one in the long run.

That tank is probably not large enough to sustain a dwarf angel. All else seems fine.

Sustaining a mandarin in a 30 gallon tank can be done, but it is difficult and requires a lot of work. The maxima will require feeding and eventually significant lighting.

Hi evryone. I have 29 gallon tank and i plan to stock it with various soft corals and maybe a few sps if everything goes well. I have a neon cleaner goby and a 6 line wrasse already, and i was thinking about adding a dwarf angel, probably a coral beauty. I know the minimum tank size recommended is 30, so... experts? If not, what are some other small, reef-safe and preferrably inexpensive species that I could look into?

A sixline wrasse has the potential to be very aggressive and is a copepod eater, which, in a small tank is potentially difficult. A dwarf angel almost certainly will have insufficient grazing in that sized tank; and of course they are not really coral safe. A flasher wrasse, while normally put into a larger tank, is likely to do well; even a pair.

I have a 350 gallon tank that I am getting ready to begin stocking in a week or so. Can someone recommend a specific clean up crew? It will be a FOWLR.

Any idea of what fish you are planning? Seems that the fish that people mainly keep in FOWLR tanks aren't CUC safe.

I haven't completetly decided yet but nothing that would eat the CUC. I am just starting with my first tank so was planning on starting as a FOWLR and see how that goes before moving to a reef tank.

Suggestions on New Fish and Cleaning Crew

Have a 120 Gallon, wet/dry sump, will be putting a 40 gal fuge this weekend. Have a k-4 powerhead. Also buying another k-4 this weekend as well. about 70 pounds of live rock, Corallife light with 3 10K bulbs and 1 actinic bulb
Right now we have 2 blue damsels, 1 yellow damsel, 3 striped damsel, engineer goby, and 3 peppermint shrimp. I would like to get some new fish, We bought the blue and yellow damsels for the cycle of the tank. The tank has been up and running for 30 days. We have no spike at all luckily! Very happy we haven't. We would like to get a clown. We will be getting rid of the Blue and Yellow Damsels. My LFS will prolly take them back. What do you think. I would also like to get some more cleaner crew. Suggestions?

I just started a 55 SW tank. This is my very first SW tank, I have about 10lbs of live rock in the tank now with 6 damsels, 2 turbo snails, 5 white leg crabs. It has a piggyback filter a Whisper 60, I also have Supreme Skilter 250 Protein Skimmer. (piggyback style) What my plans are (no big hurry) is to make my own live rock and set the tank out like I want it to. Then I want to get a few Clowns, True Percula - Black Percula - Gold Band Maroon also want to get a few Condylactis Anemone's. I'd like to get some Zoanthid Polyps, and Some Mushrooms.
The other fish I would like to get is
:Yellow Tank
:Engineer Goby
:Bangaii Cardinals
:Melanurus Fairy Wrasse
:Coral Beauty Angelfish
:Moorish Idol
:Royal Gramma Basslet

I need some info on lighting, Can I buy a bulb that will fit into my fixture that will be enough for every thing I want? I know they sell bulbs for a 48" fixture they say 10k ??? This is all new to me.......

One pair of clowns per tank -- and I would stick with the same species.
The yellow tang and Moorish Idol are going to be too big for a 55.
The Coral beauty may or may not nip at your corals -- it is a luck of the draw type thing.
"Condy" anemones are not natural hosting anemones, the clowns with either be hosted by them, ignored or eaten.

H. Crispa
H. Malu
E. Quadricolor (( BTA ))
M doreensis (( LTA ))
S. Haddoni
S. gigantea
S. mertensii
H. magnifica

Though the only one that a beginner should even consider would be an E. Quadricolor (( BTA ))

What fixture do you have?
What bulb type? (( PC, T5, MH, etc. ))

All I have right now is the fixture that came with the tank. I see this on the bulb that is in it " F40T10/48 "

That is a "normal output" florescent that will not be enough light for any anemone.
