You need to inject it a kalk slurry or lemon juice. Cutting it will just make it spread.

it's on a small rock that i can easily pull out of the tank and cut that piece off. Is that still not recommended?

If you can chisel off a piece of the rock it's attached to. If you leave any flesh behind it will just regrow.

Anyone have a good guess as to what this may be? It is black to dark purple in color has a slimy texture and is squishy to the touch. It is on a large piece of LR in my 29 gallon Nano. There is around 10 to 15 spots of it on the rock and this is the largest. "around the size of a dime. I thought it was some form of sponge but it is VERRRRY slow growing and nothing seams to bother it. Thank you.... |

It is a sponge. The holes are syphons.

First tank and first visable hitchhikers. I know they're brittle stars but anyone know what kind? How big they get? Reef safe? I'm pretty sure there's a bunch in there. Also there is a little star and some sort of sponge.
Last pic shows some sort of elusive pinkish creature i never could get a good look at. My task is a week old and I'm curious if any of this well even survive since I'm at the beginning of the cycle.

G.Smith, the first picture is an asterina starfish. Some people say take them out, some say leave them in. Your last picture looks like a bristleworm. They're generally harmless, if ugly.
Does anyone know what these little curly things are? They've just appeared on my rocks in the last couple days. They're concentrated on the purple one mostly, but I found some pockets on a different rock that was purchased separately and from a different store, and entered the tank at a different time. I thought maybe I had some baby snails or something, but they don't seem to be moving, and I think they might be too far spread apart to be that. |

Little white starfish on the glass. Is it a big deal?

The first one is some kind of starfish. It looks like an asterina star but can't see it all too well to say for sure. The 2nd and 3rd pictures are of a brittle star. The last one looks like a bristle worm.

I don't think that first one is an asterina star... I've never seen bristles on them like that before.

There's a good bit of them. I didn't even notice them until they started moving. They're like the size of a shirt button if not smaller.

Thanks a bunch, Sugar Magnolia! I suspected as much after some more googling. Yay for good hitchhikers.

Coral on Live Rock - ID?
OK, first go round. I've had pretty good luck IDing the creatures by scanning the threads but not as lucky with coral. 4 photos, each with what (I think) is some sort of coral on the live rock. Also, on the 4th photo, there are three of the coral like mounds. Two still appear normal while the third appears to be bleaching and turning white. Any suggestions to help it out? Just at the end of the tank cycle - no fish yet, just the live rock and a very small clean up crew of the hitchhikers (like the urchin in photo 2 - any ideas on his species) and a few hermits and snails. Thanks in advance!

Unknown Slug Like Creature
Here is the one critter I couldn't find on the forum thread (or perhaps I missed). Bad photo, but I'm going to use the 'small and nocturnal' defense. Dead center of the photo, less than 1/2 inch, slug like with two antennae or eyestalks at front of body (which is pointing down on the photo). Any suggestions appreciated!
