Thanks for asking Alan,
Well, we ended up buying 2 of the Toy Box Supports, because the Gas Spring Lid Support have to have a side mount, which is not possible with our set up.
Well as it turns out 2 supports is not enough to hold the lid open, and too much to close the lid. I think they call this Murphys Law right? So Ed called the MFG. and they recommended we try 1 or 2 more supports.... So we ordered 2 more to be on the safe side. Now Ed had to make a pin/hole to keep the top down!

here is pic to show why the Gas Supports will not work.

I though that the hinges I recommended had a table whereby you could select the right torque rating based on the weight of the lid. Didn't that work out for you or did you go another route (is that what the "toy box" hinge is)?

The issue with the Lid Stay Torsion hinge is it's impact on our design. The hinge would actually stick out the top of the trim and kick the trim out just enough to impact the appearance.

The toy box support will actually work we simply need one more to handle the weight. The toy box hinge does push the trim open, this was resolved by using a pin to hold the trim in place.

Okay I see what you mean. I guess you just keep adding hinges until it balances.

Well, once again time has flow by.
The tank has fully recovered from the crash, you could only imagine how relieved we are.
We are a member of our local reef club and we have some GREAT members, so with a frag here and there we have built a beautiful system.... Next year when our frags grow out, we will so the same for our members PLUS the LFS who helped us rebuild.

We had a couple of SPS's survive and they are stronger that ever.

I will take some pictures of the tank tonight and post them.

here is what I got Ed for his birthday

Well Ed picked up "2" female blonde naso tangs yesterday!
The LFS said the larger female will turn into a male, if not then it will be OK to have 2 females in the tank.
I hope he is right.

Sorry, I didn't have a chance to take pictures of the tank.
Maybe Sunday will be a better day.

Can you give me some tips on how to "train" my wife to give me fish and corals for birthdays and Christmas presents?

The trick is...........

Well.............

Hummmm......................

Just kidding Alan, you just have to take her with you to the LFS or get her to start looking at stuff on line......
Let her pick out a fish or a piece of coral.
The rest will fall in place.
That's all I had to do

I think I'll have to wait a while for that as she just shelled out over $2.5k for the tank. She happened to mention to me one day a couple of years ago, after I had finished building our sunroom that she would buy the tank as a reward for all my hard work. She didn't realize what she was committing to (or see the glint in my eyes).

I'm sure when she get's over the shell shock of the tank, it won't be long before she will have the same passion for your tank as you do!

Have you showed her any of the TOTM threads?
That's all I had to show Ed
Then he was hooked!

Sandy,

My lights have to slide to the rear (rather than to the side) because the front of the tank will extend through the wall about 8" into the viewing room. (That way you can partially see the tank from the sides...)
Something like this:

So when you order a "set", are you getting (2) 8 foot rails? If so, it looks like I can get by with one set, unless I want a third rail to support thecenter of an 8 foot wide light frame.

One last thing. Can you or Ed create one of those cool CAD diagrams like you used in the early pages of the thread, to depict the final plumbing system. I am really interested in your water change system. It really looks unique and one to replicate.

Thanks,

LL

Yes, you are getting a "set" like you use for a pocket door, top and bottom rails. We purchased 2 sets (4 rails) because we built our light rack in 2 sections. The racks move independently.

This is 1 set of lights.

I wish I could take credit for the cool CAD diagrams, Ed Reef receives all the credit for the drawings.

Do you have specific questions regarding the RO/Salt Water change system? Also you can call Ed any time. Let me know if you would like his cell#.

Your build looks awesome!

I can't wait until we get a house so that we can run a big tank with a dedicated fish room. Having a reef in an apartment is not the most practical of endeavors...the fish room is our kitchen/dining room.

Thank you,
We have really enjoyed the fish room, our old fish room was our laundry room, and Ed had a habit of washing his hands or equipment in our kitchen sink UGGGGHHHHH!
Not like we didn't have a sink in the laundry room, he would always say "this sink is closer"
