A lot of these newer, smaller tanks are tempered and can't be drilled. My buddy found this out the hard way after he spent the money for the drill bit. So when it says not to drill it, I think they mean it.

Well there is a 300gph kit and I will have a mp10 so I guess that will work a little better for the flow right?

an mp10? thats inside the tank, what are you gonna use to pump the water up from the sump to the display tank

Looking into that right now. Not sure how much flow I need to keep many corals in this tank. I am looking into keeping some sps and lps so not too sure on the type of return I want either. Still doing a lot of reading before I do anything though. Just trying to get as much input on the many options.

the mp10 with a hob skimmer will be more than enough.

So as far as filtration goes the skimmer will suffice along with very porous LR? About how many lbs would be ideal? I plan on choosing various types of rock to mix and match.

Wow! Won't that take up a lot of real estate in my tank? I have seen many with 25 and still looks like a lot more than what I want to setup. I really wanted to try and make two islands and have it open in the middle with one island being taller than the other. That is why I wanted the sump also to kind of eliminate the amount of LR in the actual display but still get the full functionality with it being in the fuge and still be able to provide some filtration. Will have to look into some heavier rock for that amount though.

check out what the nano guys say, im a big tank guy, i got 250 in a 125, and i still got lots of realestate to play with.

40-50 lbs of LR is a TON in a tank like that. if you were gonna put that much rock in you would wanna break a bunch apart (more surface area) and throw it in your sump as well. dont look for really dense rock, as it is not as good as porous LR (more porous means more surface area which means more filtration). no more than 20 pounds is fine, 30 if you wanna throw some in your sump, just get a skimmer rated for a bit higher than your tank volume (40-65 g).. and you can also get media bags and throw lots of carbon or GFO or something.. bulk reef supply has enough of that stuff to last you a lifetime.. and for really cheap too.

also... Marineland (one of the bigger companies in the tank business) makes a 15G drilled. so if you break your tank you can look into that.. its like 30 or 40 bucks retail.

Thanks! Will definitely look into the already drilled marineland tanks. May want to go bigger depending what can fit on my stand if anything happens (knock on wood), but that is kind of why I wanted to go with a sump just to be able to have more porous LR to have a lot of caves for fish to swim through and provide better filtration.
