You did make the right choice coming here for help, these folks on here are amazing. Browse the forums and read and research as much as possible and then you will have the right information to make your next purchase. Good luck.
Thank you for your reply Kaydubya!

All of my rocks are living. red and green macro algea. My tank is aged being purchased second hand with its entire sand bed and critters. the tank has been established for over 5 years and was taken care of. not alot of harmful micro algea present all of my crabs are thriving and my fish are looking great even despite the loss of their friend.

Mine has easily doubled in size in the last 2 years, and drops babies all the time. I grow the babies on frag plugs and trade them into my LFS for credit. A goni isn't really all that hard to keep and maintain IMO. Odd thing though, the alveopora(which is supposed to be easier to keep) shriveled up and died in a couple weeks in the same tank.
Love your signature.

I've always gone by a line for this hobby like yours.

FYI,

I read an expert in Goniopora's thread a few years ago.

He had pictures from the day he bought them going up to twelve years later. Really impressive.

He noted that Goniopora's do best in dirty water tanks.

Question Live Bacteria/ Live Cultures

I caught most details through reading some of these posts. I have a question, Which if you're an experienced reefer you will already have known this but, How's Your Live Bacteria In the Tank?? Because that can be dwindled down little by little ending in you having to recharge the system with some of the basics. Copepods, Iso's, etc...
Live Bactria Is KEY. Live Rock, Glass/Ceramic Rings, Or Even better, Made only In Germany I Believe. Siporax. STUFF IS AWESOME. Worth every penny as long as you buy the larger amounts.

Just a few things that could help. Adding fresh cultures of reef bugs has always helped me rebound my coral systems after long-term hassle free running.

Best of Luck,

BuckeyeMarine

Which is not true.
The red, captive grown ones work, the other ones are problematic. Also, clownfish often damage goniopora.

How many of the responders know the difference between goniopora and alveopora?

I do, had them both actually.

I'm not sure the actual count, but the polyps are different numbered. Alveopora has 12 and goniopora has 16?

Alveopora

Goniopora

I love my Picassoes, but they host the carpet anemone and pick all food from anemone (even when they are full). Then they host my Goniopora and disturb. Finally, I pick them to FOWLR tank

Yes, they are different. I have not counted yet, but read somewhere, Alveopora has 12 tips, Goniopora has 24 tips

Sorry about your coral. If they are the only lfs in your area is make sure to price check before you buy. It sounds like they charged you an awful high markup on that coral.

You can save quite a bit sometimes by looking online.

Especially dry goods and testing kits.

marrav88,

Did you have that conversion with your (LFS)?

He should have offered a replacement for another beginner coral of a full refund.

Diver Den is great but their just wrong about Scoly's being easy. There a lot of expert reefers that feel Scoly's should be left in the ocean.
