I think its more a matter of taste if your doing it just for looks. It also depends on what type of LED is being used. Some are 1 watt versions, some are less in wattage. Some are more like spots lights in the 10-30 degree light path while some are 100 degree light path like floods. Confusing huh???
It just depends on how bright you like it or how dim you like it when the lights are on. I made a bunch of light bars for mine with 470nm leds in the 4000mcd range with 30 degree of light path and used 8 on a 36" bar and 11 on a 48" bar. It came out great for my tastes and isnt too bright. The 1 watt versions you could get away with 3-4 and have the same or more light than this.

Heres a pic of mine in a 48" bar.....

Guys, the cheapest way to get "moonlights" is to go to an autoparts store (Kragen, Pep Boys, Autozone, Canadian tire, etc, etc) or even the automotive section of a mega store (Walmart, target, etc) and pick up some "dashboard mood lights" I picked up a 3 blue LED set for $5.
It is sort of like 3 little "spotlights" and they swivel around on a plastic piece. It runs on 12 volts, so you can hook it up to an AC/DC Adapter (I actually just bought one for $10 that is supposed to be for cell phone quick chargers).

Aside from the AC/DC adapter itself, the leds draw so little power that I just leave them on ALL the time. Total cost was $15.

They are cool, you can see the night life in your tank, plus they make things fluoresce.
