What skimmer and reactor are you using on the 29 gallon biocube?

I am using a NextReef MR1 reactor for my 90g reef. I removed the black sponges on top and bottom and replaced them with the sewing disks that everyone recommended. I put 500ml of the ecobak and can't seem to find a good pump to get the pellets to lightly boil. I tried a pump with about 150gph and then moved to a Rio 1400 (about 400gph) and that didn't seem to move them any either. Any suggestions on what pump to try. Not to sound like an idiot but is it possible that I didn't put the pellets in correctly???
Thanks in advance!! |

Thanks for the reply, but a maxi jet 1200 is less flow than a Rio 1400, so I don't think it will work.

I was using a maxi jet 1200 on a TLF reactor with 500ml of BP and it was working fine. Can you post a video of your reactor in action?

Count me in guys! Just started using the ecoBAK pellets tonight. I started with 1/2 the recommended amount and will add 1/4 per week until I'm using 1L. Excited to see what happens over the next few weeks.
Here's a pic of my sump with the NextReef SMR1 pellet reactor on the left.

Hi, are you supposed to use these pellets while running gfo and gac. I,m asking because right now I have 2 reactors, one with gfo and one with gac, should I just change the gfo to pellets?
Thanks,Ken |

Thanks milkman55. Hopefully my display will be sparkly clean after a month or so of these pellets.

Thanks Jeremy! Yes the pellets have been in there since last night around 10pm and are tumbling nicely. It's plumbed off the manifold from the Dart return pump so there's plenty of flow to keep them suspended. Actually I have to dial back the flow quite a bit since the Dart will really make them dance. LOL. Manifold plumbing is 1" to a 3/4" valve through the standard 5/8" tubing so flow isn't an issue. Still have a couple floaters but no clumps today at all. It's amazing, even less than 24 hrs and I'm already noticing a difference in skimmate production. Seems like it's dryer and stickier than it's ever been. And I'm only running 1/2L at this point in the reactor. I'm going to ramp it up over the next couple weeks till I'm running a full Liter. I'll try and get a video posted of pellets tumbling in the reactor tonight.

I'd like to see a video of that to see how much sweet tumbling action you have going on.

An off topic question - where do you get the ball valves that have female threads that connect to you return manifold. All I find are the slip versions they sell at Lowes or HD?

Here's a quick video of the ecoBAK Pellets tumbling in my NextReef SMR1 Reactor. Recorded from my iPhone so sorry the quality isn't the best. The tumbling looks a little faster in the video since the iPhone cam tends to blur moving objects.

They are sure tumbling a lot, according to Jon Warner It's only necessary to have a adequate flow rate (100 gph) thru the reactor. I have been running EB for quite some time and had them tumbling in the beginning, But they have since become harder to keep them suspended. I actually have seen no difference weather they are tumbling or not seems to me to be a moot point. They are keeping my Po4 at very low levels and the colors are like I have only seen once when dosing Vodka.
I think as long as there is water moving through the reactor the Pellets are getting contact with the food source they devour in the system. What matters to me is that they are keeping these nutrients at bay. Bill |

OK Bill thanks for the info. Since then, I've dialed the reactor back a bit to a slow churn. Hopefully the video will help people in their decision on what reactor to buy. The NextReef is a really nice product and really allows full suspension of whatever media someone might use in it.
