I'm sure it's in this tread somewhere, Just a quick question.....Will drilling a small hole and installing a drain tube into the cup affect the performance at all? I've got the ES-5. Had it for 10 months or so, extremely happy. Always something in the cup.
I'm going away for 10 days and it would be 1 less thing that someone has to do while feeding the fish. Thanks. Tim

The EuroReef is not designed to have an external collection cup. I wanted to do the same mod to my EuroReef and was told definitely not too. This thread explains it.

I drilled the bottom of my cup, (CS12-2), and installed a bulkhead, and a 1/2 inch drain line. The end of the drain line terminates in a ball valve, so to drain the cup, I just upon the ball valve, and drain it into a suitable container. Much easier than wrestling that big collection cup every day. I run my skimmer very wet, so the inside of the neck never gets dirty. I clean the cup every month or two because the rest of it gets pretty ugly!

Lots of us have successfully drilled the cup and added a drain to a large collection cup on our ER's.
It doesnt change the difficulty of cleaning, I just have a hose hanging off the cup. With Wet Skimming, you will find you dont need to clean the system as much. It doesnt create that hard funky crud on the inside of the cup. I only clean my 8-2 about once per month. Putting a valve on the drain is not a bad idea. I might consider that. |

Here's my 48" CS8-5-RC. I modified the collection cup with a float switch that shuts of the skimmer supply pump if the cup gets close to overflowing.

i would not install a drain but hta tis me. i would not want my skimmer overflowing and dumping gallons into a container or on my floor. this could mess up flooring or mess w/ your SG.
docjay - nice idea! that is one hella huge skimmer. got pics of it up and running?? Lunchbucket

![]() Oh yeah, it's not threaded it's permanently glued they just leave the PVC bottom of the cup undrilled so you have the option. kc ![]() |

Jay,
any reason you went with the taller cs8-5-rc rather than the shorter cs-12-1-rc or cs-12-2-rc? Both the8-5 and 12-1 have 300+ gallon ratings and are fairly close in price. Just curious.

Hi Guys,
The pic is as big as i can make it and still come in under the 50kb upload limit to my gallery. I went with the taller version because I wanted to be able to push more water thru the unit. Since the outlets are on the bottom of the skimmers, I figured the taller unit would let me push more water thru it before it starts to force bubbles out to the sump. Jay |

Hey guys/gals, took the time while i've got my 180g down for the new stand i'm building to do a little work on the 12-2. i spoke with Jeff at ER about doing a RC mod to it and he said doing half a mod would improve skimming and a full mod would do wonders. well i had the parts for 1/2 the mod and ordered enough to finish it up to a full one but they haven't made it in yet, here are a few pics of the progress so far. the intent is to feed the skimmer with a Mag 3 pumping from the 'Anthony Calfo Raw Water' input chamber i'm going to make in the new sump.

Well i hate to do this as it has been asked before, but I need to know what size fittings to get for a gate valve mod on my 8-1.
Ive searched but just dont have the time to look through so many pages.
