bleach - this is a friendly, family suitable forum, not like many of the other types of forums out there. Mods here will warn, then ban you for statements like that, as they should.

26 pages and not a comment on coral growth? Has anyone seen any positives to led's for reefkeeping?

Currently I am still monitoring my coral growth in my sump / fuge where I have my LED array running. I think that I overdrove the LEDs as they have a noticablly grew dimmer than when they were new. Unfortunately I do not currently have any solid evidence as to good or bad, but I will definately post progress as time passes.

Define already made up?
All you need is sand a few #s of rock, about $30 in frags and a light. Oh and a $15 hang filter, probably cost less than that. |

I believe that he is looking for a built LED setup for his nano, not the stuff to put in it. That is assuming his request follows the thread it was posted in....

LED's
As manufacturer of the MoonScape nightlight (we don't use the term "moonlight), we know the moon's light to be much more complicated than most people understand. For example 475nanometers refers to a small PEAK in the VISIBLE spectrum of light emitted by the moon. The total spectrum is much broader, with many peaks and includes the invisible spectrums as well. So claims of "increased coral growth and spawning" is without substance. There is no objective supportive data. Even the "lunar cycle circuits" are flawed. But these LED's do serve a purpose and are the best lighting bang for the buckout there. They light our tanks for the other 12 hours, we can see nocturnal activity and they DO NOT HARM corals or fish (in the case of our lights). That we have tested.
LED's are the "light of the future" for many applications but it may be quite a while until they can compare with MH's and are suitable for coral growth. I too would not discourage anyone from experimenting. It is worthwhile and has allowed us to accomplish our goals so far.

I am looking for a set of lights that I can fit into my 3 gallon nano. Something like a retrofit that already has all the wiring done. Anyone sell anything like that?

Actually, I am in the process of creating my own LED array. This array will have: 70 21000 Mcd White LEDs 40 7850 Mcd Blue LEDs I am connecting it to a control board I have here at work to turn on certain sets of lights, at certain times. I am going to test it on a small tank for now, and try to grow a peice of coral to see if it works ok. Once it is completed, I will post pics. can't wait to see pics, i have been searching radio shack for control boards to avoid having to lots of wires. For now i have been drilling then using a project box as a cover.

Im still working on it. I have been off work for the past several weeks with a bad back. Kinda hard to get up and drill holes in acrylic and stoop over a load of wires when you are confined to bed for a month
![]() Once it is completed I will let everyone know.

I know this thread has been mostly concerned with using LEDs as a main light source, but is anyone using them as a substitute for actinics? On my old 30 gallon "nano" setup, my two 1w moonlights fluoresced corals enough to be noticeable through the 150w MH.

here is the first one i made, when trying different types of wiring and LED's, i have white, UV, Blue, and red. When i tried the flors. UV just made tank dark, but i am thinking that since the LED is more focused light it may just penetrate the water alot better...i will be experimenting with them soon..here's what i have done so far..i kinda got caught up in breeding african cichlids there for awhile...
![]() And i began one for my 10g hex, figured a planted tank.. ![]() ![]() with that 10g setup, i am just going to use a project box for cover and install a push switch...that has 20 white LED's i believe.

Has anyone followed through with LED lighting effects on actual long term coral growth yet?

I know this thread is quite long, but I'm still wondering if anyone has anything specific to show for their LED ideas. I was doing some research, and it seems it should be feasible given the right array of LEDs. Any new pics?
