well its a very bad shame that your aquarium has been wiped out, but its done and time to start again, best to wash all equipment in fresh water first to remove the soap, then soak it in vinegar for 24 hours, then wash it out again with fresh clean tap water.

then just start over, think about this, you can now add new rock and sand and alter the aquascape to a new set-up, im sure there were times you wished it looked different, well nows your chance, get the cycle out of the way and slowly re-stock.

chin up time to begin again

Ha ha! Too true. The thread already has shades of it. or maybe Springer. Thats the last thing we'd want to see, I was kinda jesting to make a point.

The equipment (like everyone said) should certainly be re usable, and 2 1/2K is a good amount to build something awesome. You should do a tear down and build thread!

It's kind of human nature. That and the anonymity of the Internet for the most part. Revenge is rarely ever sweet when it's plotted out. Moving on and having a great life without them usually is.

It does suck that someone would destroy something like that out of rage.

Obviously you need a new girlfriend. That kind of goes without saying, but anyone who would take an argument with you out on innocent creatures.....is the kind of woman that will one day kill you in your sleep. Either that, or she will do something else haneous that is really uncalled for. Surely you had something to do with her rage, but for her do do that is just nuts.

All the rock will need to be hosed off, vinegar bathed and I would also run it in a bin with some carbon as well.

Good luck with the restart.....on the tank and love life.

As another poster said you could go down the cruelty to animals road if there is a case of an unsympathetic official of some sort. I'd also be very wary until you get that money in your hand as well.

I had a situation with an ex where she was also pretty psycho and managed to take a lot of my things along with her own when she finally got out. Because I wasnt there during that time I didnt have any recourse to get my things back. So watch out.

As for your stuff... I am sure it has some value, I know if I lived near you I would probably take the stuff and clean it myself. I am sure you can find someone who will pay a small/decent amount for things that are perfectly fine but require some elbow grease.

Back to the original question, I would recommend cleaning the tank and equipment with copious amounts of fresh water and vinegar rinses. Throw the sand. However, the live rock can be preserved as sterile base rock and reseeded with bacteria and critters over time by soaking it in bleach water for a couple of days, then rinsing the rock and soaking it in water and Amquel. You can save the rock structures you've already accumulated and buy some new pieces of LR to start the cultures. It would take some time, but you might save hundreds of dollars.

Very sorry for your loss. That's just terrible.

I hope she's out of your life - anyone who could do that to animals is just not right in the head. Feel angry or jelous, but go jogging or play racket ball with that energy, don't kill things.

I'm a girl...and in the hobby... love it in fact... so we're not all bad.

Freed, your 3 or 4 posts on this thread are some of the most asinine things I have come across.

Not only do you pretend to be taking the high road, you have the audacity to suggest that the OP is at fault for what amounts to animal cruelty.

His girlfriend needs help, she chose to take action against something the OP really values, but did not care that the living things died as a result. There are underlying issues there, and it is obvious to anyone that she is not capable of being in a healthy relationship at this time.

Shame on you for your posts and your view.

You can't be serious...you really have no clue how your posts come across or what you are saying to the OP, do you?

A person like that would've shot your dog or beat your kid because she was mad at you.

Get a gf who's got the moxie and the honesty to take her fight where the fight is, not pick on innocents while your back is turned. You can't ever trust somebody like that, no matter any other qualities.

Because this was the very first post added to this thread which was useless and irresponsible, the fact that you have a history of passive aggressive posts which call people out and bate them, and the fact that you kept going down the same road in this thread with your so-called suggestions as to how everything was his fault is why you are taking a beating here. You didnt know his situation before hitting the submit button and were not helpful at all with his question. People can read. Look back to page one of this thread and read and you will see that your opinions dont help the OP out. We are in the new to the hobby forum with a member asking a legit question about what to do about a tank that was just ruined. He is looking for suggestions from mature members with insight on what to do about his reefing disaster.
I have tried to keep my mouth shut over the last few years with personel opinions that are unhelpful but this thread is derailed, now off topic, and not usefull. Hopefully the OP can take some of the suggestions about his aquarium and put them to use to move on with his hobby.
Water, garbage can, and time will be of help, not your Dr. Phil crap.
Sorry about loosing my cool, but what the heck? This is RC, not Oprah!
