2 A150's

I am light shopping for my 40 breeder. I feel like I have looked at everything and it is only making things worse the more I look and get confused with all the options. However, I keep coming back to the kessils. For the sake of budget and simplicity, I was thinking about going with two Kessil A150w's (1-Sky blue and 1-Ocean Blue) over the 40 breeder. They are $160 per light now and from what I understand, there is no need for a controller, just a simple timer will suffice. Is this correct in that they are simply On or Off and are not dimmable? I like the idea of mixing the two lights. I saw it on youtube and it looks like a nice color.

The other light I am also considering is the 36 inch 14K XB series light from BuildMyLeds.com. Which set-up would be better for the money? Both set-ups are just over $300. Which would be a better choice?

Thanks for the help/input?

The problem with not being able to dim LEDs IMO, is that when comparing to the sun, the sun is not at full strength the full duration while its out. And you'll have to run your lights for a significantly shorter photo period or else risk algae problems or completely cooking your corals.

A lot of people stress ramping up and down, but there was a whole of of amazing tanks before we had this ability. I have run the 150 setup your talking about and it works fine. Just make sure you have the ability to control the height cause every time you acclimate a new carol you'll need to raise it up and shorten your photo period.

1 A160w

Would 1 A160w be enough to cover a 40B? How high would it have to hang to get this kind of coverage. I was thinking I can get a A160 and a controller for $320 and then get another A160w when I grow into it. My tank is new and currently does not house coral. If I started in the middle and worked my way to the sides, which will take awhile, I could get another A160 when the time is right. Would this be better option that going with 2 A150's? The total price difference, using today's prices, would be $180 increase. 2 A160's with a controller would be $180 more than 2 A150's. The mounting brackets are not included in these numbers.

One will leave really harsh shadows on the edges. I wouldn't do it, it would look really bad imo.

2 A350's sound like a lot of light for a small tank like the 40 breeder. it also sounds like a lot of money invested in a lighting system. I am hoping to stay around $300 - $400. I was thinking the smaller kissels would be better for me because I can buy them one at a time rather than having to drop $400 in a single transactions.

I may just go with the A150's, but my concern is they lack control. When considering the A160's, it increases the price by $180. Due to this, I am also considering the AI Prime lights as they have the added controllability function and I can also buy them one at a time.

I would then start with one A150 (Are they really only $70? I thought they were $160) or an A160 then add a second one.

Don't get the Primes.

They are Terrible Lights.

The a150's are $160 each so $320 for a pair of them
The a160's are $239 each and $99 for a controller so $577 for two lights and a controller

Most people get Goosenecks so don't forget about those.

You can skip the controller or buy it later as well.

So I I finally started my new set up and purchased my Kessil 360 used. The light works great manually with the knobs but whenever I connect it to the controller (Kessil) I can never get the intensity to be bright white. Does anyone else have this problem? It seems like whenever I hook up the controller it just looks too blue

I just got my 40 up and going last week. I went with 1 360 and a controller. Couldn't be happier with it. Plenty of light spread in the tank with very minimal shadowing on the ends. Only " dark " spots in the tank are the back corners up by the lid. Not too worried about it seeing as how my corals will not be there.

Both settings on 100%, ian09?
Should be pretty bright.
No acclimation setting that can be limiting the output?

janci, yes. Manually with the knobs unconnected to the controller the lights are super bright. What I have trouble with is when it's "connected" to the controller. For some reason it just doesn't get bright at all but stays more blue no matter if I ramp up the intensity to 100%. I wonder if it has something to do with the connections, like it's not making proper contact. Anyone know anything? I hate staring at a blue tank but I like the use of the controller. The colors of what little coral I have really pop but I like a more white tank.

Mine is acting same with controller as without and I do not see difference in white scale with the color setting 100%.
I have checked on both output channels of the controller and they are the same result on the fixture.

Are yall in manual mode? If your running a quickset youll have to adjust the numbers in there. Also make sure your cable goes to the input port on the light

Janci, thanks again but I don't think your helping me lol! Yours working the way it should definitely doesn't help my problem. But I appreciate your input. Thanks again.

Stingeragent, thanks. I have tried troubleshooting and even on manual mode it does this and is more blue. But, if I pull out the cables it goes bright. As soon as I place it back in, it's blue again. Maybe it's corroded inside and not making good contact is what I'm guessing.

When the light is not plugged in, it goes off of the control dials, when you are using the controller, as soon as you plug it in, it goes off what the controller is telling it. Try and setup a quick set program, and adjust the values and see if it changes. If not i'd guess you either have a faulty controller, the cable is bad, or maybe the ports it plugs into.

I currently have it running on a quickset timer program I made up. I'm pretty sure it's either the light, cable, or controller. I'll see if I can troubleshoot and use a different cable. The controller is new so I don't believe it that. Sigh, oh well maybe I'll just turn the knobs lol!

Change of subject, is there a color spectrum that is best from the Kessils for acclimation? As in more blue or more white? Naturally the blue light penetrates the water deeper, so I would think that maybe a whiter light would penetrate the water less? Not sure how much this plays into such a shallow tank when compared to the ocean. Thoughts?

I currently have 2xA360WE over my 36" tank. Amazing lights showing very good growth on my corals. Before I bought them, I was waiting for the AP700 to come out. I plan to buy an AP700 within the next couple of months, as it was my first choice to begin with. Either way, you cannot go wrong.

If on a budget, even a pair of A160WE will serve you right on that size tank.
