The problem with algae blennies is you can run out of algae and they starve

I have a thirty gallon tank, and I want to get:
2 common clown fish 1 fire fish 1 Scarlet Skunk Shrimp 1 Bumblebee snail 1 Margarita Snail Though recently I have been thinking about how to start the nitrogen cycle in my tank. I was hoping to do a suggestion in the book I have been reading which says I can use some water from an established tank and some chemical ammonia; unfortunately it seems that the only chemical ammonia available is for cleaning purposes and probably has other chemicals in it. In light of this I have been trying to think of a good starter fish (I was thinking of dropping the Margarita Snail to make room for it). I hoping for something cheap but also hardy. I have noticed that Damselfish are exactly suited for it according to the book and pet solutions.com. The only problem is their aggressiveness, so I thought I would ask here: Will the Damselfish live with the fish I mentioned above? If they do not can someone here give me a fish that will be suitable? Thank you. |

Instead of using a fish to cycle, you can add some uncooked shrimp from the frozen foods section of your grocery store and let it rot. This provides the ammonia source for the cycle and no fish have to endure the process. Additionally, you don't need to worry about getting the damsel out of the tank.

Thank you for the reply, I will look into that.
Because I was thinking about dropping the Margarita Snail to make room for the starter fish I now have another idea of a fish I would like to add with the others (instead of the Margarita Snail) that is a Green Coral Goby. I found it when I followed one of the forum's sponsor links last night. I also noticed it stays very small so that should not be a problem. |

I need help. I am planning on getting a 60 gallon aquarium kit, which comes with the lighting, filtrations, etc. Here is a link to this aquarium:
http://www.fosterandsmithaquatics.co...=43307&catid=3 I am planning on starting with a FOWLR aquarium at first and maybe adding some mushrooms in the future. However, before I make my final decision I need to know if these fish/inverts would be ok for a 60 gallon aquarium, or am I wanting to much? Bicolor Blenny Blue/Green Reef Chromis x 3 Clown Goby Firefish Kaudern's Cardinal x 3 Orchid Dotty Back Sailfin/Algae Blenny Mated pair Ocellaris Clownfish Blue Dot Jawfish Inverts: LTA Scarlet Reef Hermit Crabs x 30 Dwarf Blue Reef Hermits x 30 Astrea Turbo Snails x 30 Nassarius Snails x 20 Peppermint Shrimps x 4 Dwarf Colored Feather Dusters x 2 Sand Sifting Sea Star Blue Tuxedo Pincushion Urchin Any help is appreciated. I won't be setting up my aquarium for at least 6-7 months, however I just want to get an idea on what I am doing. I have done a lot of research, just need some input. Thanks |

Totally new to the hobby! I've purchased a 210 gallon tank, and want to start with a fish only tank to start with. The books say to make a "wish list", so these are the fish I want to have:
Lionfish (probably more than one) Blue Hippo Tang Panther Grouper Marine Betta Emperor Angelfish (I want one of the little ones to see it change, but am afraid that it will be eaten) Zebra Eel Will these work together? |

To Reef Central First, even with that sized tank, the grouper will get too big (( plus they get, IMO, ugly as they mature. What type of lionfish?

I believe some groupers can reach lengths of almost 2 feet.

Alternately you can purchase fully cured live rock from someone else's tank and providing you use ro water be ready to add a fish in a day or so.

lta---not for 4 months scarlet reef hermits 5 dwarf blue hermits 5 nassarius snails 10 peppermint shrimps 2 nix the sand sifting sea star When you first establish your tank you are trying to increase the numbers of inverts etc in your sand bed. Hermits and esp the sand sifting star can consume these critters before they can make a sustainable population

Looking to add a few more reef friendly fish.
75 gallon tank. Currently holds false clown, blue hippo tang, domino damsel, 2 yellow tailed blue damsels. I also have a snail or two. Looking to add coral and bubble tip anemone in the near future, so I need something reef friendly. Any suggestions on fish and/or coral for a saltwater beginner? |

I will give this a shot, but more in retrospec, I was looking for a link like this early. I think I have gotten carried away and stocked too quickly, and if I have anything that is too much or a set up for trouble, let me know:
Current Fish: - Flame Angel - False Perc - Black Clown - Hippo - Powder Brown Current Inverts: - Colored Tuxedo - Anemone - Orange Dragon Sea Slug - Cleaner Shrimp - Pepermint - Electric Blue Hermits - Nassarius - Cerith - Astrea Current Coral: - Branching Frog Spawn - Acan - Birdsnest (frag) - Elegance - monti cap x 2 (frag) - torch - zoo's x5 varieties (frag) - shrooms x 3 varieties (frag) - favia - scroll (frag) - candy cane (frag) - white lightning sponge - hammer (frag) - Duncan (frag) My tank is about 4 months old, and most appears to be doing well. I think I am done with corals and inverts and will let it grow out. From a fish perspective would like to find a fish or 2 that pop in and out of the rock work to give additional interest, and potentially a school (anthias or green chromis?) would love to hear suggestions. Thanks in advance

What type of anemone?
IMO, you did stock too much too soon, and still might see some issues --- even more so if your filtration is correct in your sig. Any "school" would be too much of a bio-load hit -- those 2 tangs (( both of which will get too big for a 48" tank, IMO )) are going to produce large amounts of waste.

That was what I wAs worried about. The anemone was sold to me as a riteri (sp?) but it has neon green tips and a hot pink foot that it buries in the substrate. I was told the key with them was light, and my par readings are off the chart so was told it would be good. My biggest issue with it is that the clowns don't even seem to know he is in the tank after
month. Is there a reason you called him out? Something in particular to be concerned with? Couple things to note, my sig is correct as far as my set up. I take my water weekly to the stores for testing and they say my parameters are spot on. My skimmer pulls out the blackest stuff I have seen, which everyone tells me is great. Algae exists but far from a problem compared to most tanks, though wish my coraline ws more agressivE, I have some dark purple, some light purp, and some orange. Also at this point fish are all small (2") except for the powder at 4". So now that I am in this situation anything I should do?

The reason I called it out is the poor track record of anemones in new/quickly set up tanks. Long term, I would get rid of the "hippo" -- the powder I would take out too, but at this point would be happy if the hippo was going to be removed. That would allow you to add more fish to your tank.
