Confused !! LR or LR Rubble in Fuge??

There seems to be different opinions on whether to use LR or LR rubble in filters and fuges lately..so what else is new? LOL. I have a CPR fuge that holds about 5 1/2 gallons on the back of my 75 that has a DSB. I have LR rubble and sand and Chaeto in the fuge. Would it be better and accumulate less detritous (?) if I put a large piece in instead?

I have a 35 Hex Mantis tank and use an Emperor 280 as filter and have LR rubble in a media bag in it. Should I exchange this rubble for larger pieces also? I keep the media bag rinsed clean every couple of days and only use it to keep pieces of rock out of the impellor. There also a DSB in this tank, along with LR and Chaeto.

Your learned imput is very appreciated.

Anytime you can get LR inline with your DT its for the better. With that said, I'm not too sure it's important if its rubble or larger pieces.

It doesnt matter which you use. The term LR rubble is loosely used because many of our big show pieces of LR are in our DTs. Which leaves the smaller or rubble pieces for the fuge. Keep in mind that if you have a bunch of small pieces in a pile it will collect some crap in the crevices. Im always moving stuff around in my fuge.

This is the biggest problem with rubble, much for the same reason folks don't recommend crushed coral substrates or densely packed live rock in a display. Anytime there's an area for detritus to stagnate, it can/will break down and be a source of excess nutrients in the water column (nitrate, phosphate). If you're looking to add surface area for bacteria to grow, I'd get larger pieces, but honestly I doubt you need it in the first place. Very little substrate is needed to sustain a tank, and I wouldnt be worried about the small amount you can add to the fuge.
