Aquarium Chillers
Does anyone use one, and if so what brand? If not how do you keep the temperatures down in the summer. I have metal halides and it gets a little hot in my 75 gallon.

I have a small chiller for my BioCube. The temps get up there pretty fast. However I only kick the chiller on in the dead of summer when it gets real hot. Otherwise I just use fans. On the larger tanks I just use fans. the down side is the evaporation, you will be doing a lot more top offs.

Also, if you use the fans, I highly recommend using an ATO ( Auto Top Off ) unit.

i have a halide too and ive seen many with halides resolve this problem with either computer fans or a small walmart 5 inch clip fan.... chillers are far too expensive you should try the fan solution...if it doesnt work...then id say throw some money into a chiller. try the easy cheap solution out first.

I had 2 broken computers that I got 6 fans out of. I took my old cell phone chargers and used them to power the fans. Essentially quiet and uses very little electricity.

Hey, i had a huge problem trying to keep my temp stable when i set my tank up. I bought a 1/4hp Hailea chiller and i love it. It keeps my tank very stable and it has a digital readout on the front of it for piece of mind..
I love in Western Australia and our temperate range from winter to summer is 68 - 111 My tank never exceeds 82.4 now. Ohh and i get very little evaporation. Hope this helps..

I am running a JBJ artica 1/5hp chiller on my 90gal with 2x250 watt halides. I am also running 2 icecap 4 inch fans built into my cannopy. In the winter the chiller hardly turned on, now that temp are in the 80's like today it has been running off and on all day. My temp stays stable from 78.5-77.5 degs. I love this chiller as it is very quite, it is less noisy then a small dorm frig. I got it from www.reefgeek.com (sponsor of RC) it was on clearence at the time for almost half off. Check them out if you are thinking of needing one.
