From what I have read that is a bad thing to do.

It makes 1.025 water read 1.022.

I get a lower reading consistently when I use R/O to calibrate. About -2.

I used Randy H-F's homemade calibration fluid. http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2004-06/rhf/index.php

I use calibrated solution from BRS. RO water leads to somewhat close but inaccurate results.

I use American Marine Pinpoint salinity monitor 53.0 mS calibration fluid it has the same refractive index as NSW. Here is a good read, Reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-12/rhf/index.php

The point of calibration is you have to know exactly what your solution consists of. RO/DI water doesn't fit the bill.

I also just use RO/DI water, but on the last 4 water changes. Ive been doing some comparisons with RO/DI water and calibration fluid (pinpoint) from BRS. My results were identical..

Pinpoint solution for me. Tried distilled and RO/DI and they were way off. Made Randy's DIY Solution and it was close but without a scientific balance its near impossible to get exact.

Funny thing is when my club had a testing party with all our refractometers, hydrometers etc.....all of our glass float (bobber style) hydrometers were accurate. Not what we expected.

Glass floats are pretty darn accurate.

I have calibration solution but it is .01 +/- calibration for 0.... so it is not super accurate either.

My calibration fluid and my RODI water read the same thing. So I guess you can say I use RODI water. I wont be replenshing calibration fluid when its gone. Both liquids made my refracto meter .002 higher then 0
