differences between florida & yuma rics?
since the mushroom forum gets hardly any visitors, i figured i'd also post here. i'm wondering what the main differences between the two types of ricordia are. i've read about them, but i'm still not sure. do floridas have green mouths, while yumas do not? liveaquaria said yumas require stronger lighting than floridas...but from what i've read on here, the opposite seems true. also, from your experience, what tank conditions do each prefer?
i currently have an orange rics with green mouths. i'm thinking he is a florida. he's at the bottom of my 12 gal under 72W PCs and it looks like he is fading in color a bit after 4 days. i think i should move him higher up. i also have bigger, bright green rics with dark blackish mouths. i was told at the store that they are floridas, but i'm thinking they are yumas. not sure though.... anyway, they are at the bottom too and looking great so far. thanks, Dan |

Well, they are distinctly different species, hailing from entirely different sides of the world. In general, Ricordea florida has very vivid coloration--the oranges, reds, blues that most are used to. Ricordea yuma tend to be a bit more drab by comparison.

Yuma's drab? True it is much more common to see drab Yumas than drab Florida ricordea, but you see colorful Yumas available, but they are extremely pricey.

Here's a little more information for you with a TON of examples.
Also, read this article for everything that you would ever want to know about Corallimorphs.

It's interesting in that the differences are hard to describe. But if you saw one sitting next to another, you'd be able to see the difference easily.
The best way that I can describe a Yuma vs. a Ric is that the yuma does indeed tend to be a little more drab in coloration. They also tend to have varied long and short tentacles coming off of the body (a Ric's are usually uniform). |

This site might help. Im pretty sure its exclusively florida rics. I like the pictures of the rocks that are solid rics side by side. I think they state somewhere on there the pretty ones are from florida, but seeing how they operate there, they might be biased.

thanks!
cutie, i have that same florida ric. i noticed the yuma is down by the sand...is the florida up higher in the tank? when i got my florida, it looked like that. over the past 5 days, i've had it on the sand and its colored all sorta faded to a pale purpleish orange. i moved it higher in the tank...hopefully it will like it better up there. -Dan |

the yuma is when i first got it. I put it low untill i could figure out how high i should place it. It's higher now, but i'm thinking of lowering it a little again (just not down to the sand) I have MH over my tank My ric is over 1/2 way up probally 8" from the surface with a 150watt MH (280watts total fixture) I would move the ric higher if i was you.

Remember, I had a 150W MH over a 19" tall tank. It WAS NOT happy when I moved it out of the light. It was perfectly happy at the middle of the tank almost in the center (right at the light level that my Hammer seems to like).

Travis, or anyone else...
I posted a question about Ricordia the other day but couldn't get any answers. I'm curious how fast they multiply? If you start with a few can you expect so see a significant increase over the corse of a year or so?

someone probably has a better answer than this, but if they are happy, i think ricordia will multiple fairly quickly. i've seen pics of tanks a year old with rocks covered in rics.

Sorry, I was gone. I would have replied sooner. I'm not an expert on Corallimorphs, but I sure deal with them a lot. So, take any of my advice with a grain of salt. Everyone's experience will vary.
