Hey guys, let me start by wishing all of you a happy new year filled with Gods blessings.
Her is my question. I have a purple tang that I will be placing in my new 120g with a 50g sump. I used to have it together with a naso tang until it passed away and I would like to know what other tangs I could keep together with it? Please share your personal stories and pics if possible. Please remember that it is a 120g (4x2x2) I would love to keep yello tangs but I figure that would be the most difficult, but what about a chevron, yellow mimic, powder blue or sohal? (I know the sohal grows large but I would get it small and would transfer when it gets larger) Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. ![]() ![]()

powder blue would be good as well as yellow mimic sohal gets to big and you would have to add the yellow and chevron at the same time as the puple and same size so they dont fight

yellow tang is the hardiest of the tang. If you add both the purple and yellow to your new 120 at the same time. It should work out fine.

I would not. Did that - added a PT and a YT at the same time. The PT destroyed the YT in a matter of days. Then 2-3 months later it started killing off all my other fish - it was chasing them till they would die from stress.
I took both back to the LFS. |

As long as they have different body styles and are apx. same size, you should be fine with two.

Both the Yellow Tang and Purple Tang are part of the genus Zebrasoma - thus same body form. Trust me it is just a matter of time until the PT will become belligerent.
Maybe this helps: http://www.wetwebmedia.com/zebrasom.htm |

My sailfin also killed many many of the fish i put into my tank. Later she was removed to the sump and 3 weeks later she was reintroduced to the tank with 2 more tangs. It all stopped

I have a PT and a YT in my 90g for almost a year now with no problems at all! They were added at the same time. If anything, the Yellow will boss the Purple around! But now I'm setting up a 180g next week and both will have ample swimming room!

If the PT is in the tank first..........I think it will be tough to put in any other tang. The PT I had was very aggressive and wouldn't allow anything to be added to the tank other than a mandrain.

I have a Naso, 3 yellows, sohal, clown tang, hippo tang, purple tang, and a PBT in a 150 for several months going strong and I never had any problems. And They were not all added the same day. GEt creative with your rockwork and feed heavy and then skim that out, thats my plan.

I agree with Mike (by the way....go beavers!!) PT are one of the more aggressive tangs. I have multiple yellows, naso, sailfin, and keyhole together, but in a large system. Go for the different body shape.

I have a mimic tang in my 90 and he is always grazing hasn't bothered anything. I would highly recommend one, mine is about 4" right now have had him for about a year.

Thanks all. I plan on introducing a couple of regular fish first and allow them to pick their spots then introduce the tangs all at once.
The PT would probably be the last to go in but please keep the suggestions coming. Anyone have a chevron with a PT?

By the way. All accomodations would be temporary as I am planning (if everything goes well and as planned) to get a 180g by the end of the year.

My 2.5" Scopas still picks on my 3.5" YT but the war has de-escalated considerably in the past few weeks. If you have lots of hiding places you should be OK but I agree that a different body shape will lead to a smaller chance of conflicts.

I agree that PT is a nasty fish, at least the one that I had. It killed a six line wrasse that is another nasty one, I guess different body shape doesn't matter. It also picked on my tiny four stripes damsel, but the amazing part is that the damsel doesn't seem to mind at all despite huge size difference (1" vs 3"). But it left my clown pair and shrimp goby alone.
The only way that I see it will work out is to get the chevron or YT at around 3" and the PT around 2", and get the PT in your display later than your other tang. In a reef tank setting, PT will be the last fish no matter what the other fishes are, for FOWLR fishes like trigger and puffer are different stories though. |
