Unhappy My dead foxface

Hi guys
Ive had my foxface for about 2 monthes before he died on monday. I left friday to go out of town and i noticed the night before that during the evening he would swim to the top corner of the aquarium and lose a bit of his color (but he wasnt sucking air from the surface). But then in the mornings he seemed quite happy. I come back on monday and my roomate informs me he died. He said he turned kida blackish, but no signs of desease in the tank. all other fish are happy. The only thing i can think of is my inability to read my nitrate test (maybe it was really high). If someone knows of a link on how i am supposed to look into the test tube without the refraction screwing with my reading please send it
