glass top?

is it really neccessary to have a glass top over a tank with MH? i was going to leave the tops off because i hate cleaning that nasty salt creep off every week but then i read somewhere that its a good idea to have them because it protects from UV rays.

I would run some sort of guard over the MH bulb or fixture, but not over the tank unless you have jumpers.

I have a Mogal base so I don't think a glass shield is needed since the bulb is constructed with a glass shield over the actual bulb already
