live rock lighting
I bought some fiji live rock for my new tank and it's now cured. I'm gradually building the system. the live rock shows some coralline algae, but not much after the curing process. I'm worried that this purple and green hard algae may die because I only have a 40w light for now. I plan to upgrade the lighting to a 250w but I'm unable any time soon. Will the algae survive? will the low lighting cause a surge in unwanted algae vs. colorful coralline algae?

I think with the lighting conditions being supplied to the tank at the moment, micro/nuisance-algae will probably have the upper hand relative to the coralline. But that's not to say coralline is impossible because from what I know there are different strains of coralline that have their own lighting preferences - some may like low light, while others high. The micro-algae may end up out competing the coralline for nutrients and what not however.
Just my opinion! =) cheers |

even if you lose some now to bad algae, if you get a good clean up crew to keep it in check. when you get your 250 wat lighting and keep CAL high purple will come back.

agreed, dont' worry too much about it, odds are it'll be back if it does die off now.
