pump plumbing
I'm starting my first saltwater tank and I have never had to plumb a sump before. I have a 120gal tank with two 1" drainage lines and two 3/4" return lines. I purchased a sequence dart pump for the return pump. The issue I'm having is plumbing from the sump to the pump. The sump that I have only has two 1" return bulkhead holes, but the pump has a 2" inlet and a 1.5" outlet. The manual says that the pipe feeding the pump has to be at least 2" so I can't just plumb two 1" lines since that is only 1/2 of the area of a 2" line. Therefore, I was just going to plug up the holes in the sump and run plumbing from the pump over the sump wall and down into the reservoir (see attached image).
I had a go at it yesterday with normal PVC pipe but I think that all of the elbows required to plumb the pump would cause some issues and it looked really awkward. I now think that it would be better to use barbed connections with flexible hose in the same orientation with the checkvalve below the sump water level. I have found a website online with all the parts I need, but decided I would check with you guys before I waste a bunch of money. Is flexible hose logical for this kind of connection? Will I have issues with the pump since I have to run the line over the sump wall? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Eric |

To Reef Central i would return the dart pump and get a different pump. i think you are going to have too much restriction with only 2x 3/4"return lines, and running the pipe up and over into the sump is not going to work well. that pump really needs to be flood feed. if you insist on using that pump drill the sump for a 2" bulkhead. |
