general lighting question
If I have a lighting fixture that supports 2x250w MH.
What would happen if I used 150w bulb? or 175w? Would that cause a problem? I'm not planning on doing it, just wanting to understand. thank |

it would probably ruin the bulb.

You'd overpower the bulb and it'd burn out rather quickly.

what if you reversed it, and had a 175 ballast and put in 250s?

It might light the bulb, but the output might be strange. I'd still worry about starting a fire somehow.

I was told when I asked this question that the bulbs are different sizes and won't fit.

I think 175 W and 250 W mogul bulbs have the same base, at least sometimes. I'll check, if I can remember.

if you put a low wattage bulb in a high wattage outlet it would probably burn the bulb out very quickly
If you put a high wattage bulb in a low wattage outlet it would either not light it or it would mess up your ballast. Either way it wouldn't work.
