Equipment Noob ????'s
I have never ran a sump, refugium UV anything like that before...i had a few questions i was hoping to get some knowledgeable answers for...
1.) Can someone explain what a sump, fuge, skimmer and UV stelizer do/are?? I have a 30g do i need one or all? 2) i am also interested in upgrading my heater in my 30g? any specific brands better than others but reasonably cheap? 3) i have a very basic strip light i purchased bc my dad broke my orignal light fixture...im looking for a fairly cheap light fixture and a good (not crazy powerful) light. Can someone help me out?? 4) i will be setting up a 175g in the near future and was wondering what would be needed for that and what brands, or models would be a good quality but not overly pricy... Thanks a bunch guys! |

A sump is where all your nasty surface skimmed water goes to be cleaned up. A fuge is a place without any predators to keep a pod population to help supply fish and corals with some food. Most people will put macroalgae there as well for nutrient export. I am running a 30 as well with a 10 gal sump. I ran it without a skimmer for a couple months and everything seemed ok, but after I started running I noticed less algae and better looking corals.
A skimmer removes dissolved organic compounds (doc's) from the water. Someone else will have to chime on the u.v. Ive never used one but many feel strongly about them on both sides of the fence. Craig's list and ebay and for sale forum are great places to pick up used equipment for fraction of retail.
