questions on new tank
I will be setting my tank up this next weekend and was wanting to get some different opinions on some things. I have some live rock from the tank when I bought it setting in a large cooler with a powerhead in it. I have noticed several blue mushrooms starting to pop up on a few of the rocks. This is good because I was wanting some of these anyhow.
When I start putting everything in this coming weekend I was wondering if these will be killed in the cycling of the tank? I washed the sand and have it in a large tote with no water. It is still kinda wet from washing though.I'm planning on a 4" sandbed. I will be putting about 25-30 gals from previous set up and the rest (30-35 gal) will be fresh saltwater. I was told to let the tank stay in the dark for about 2-3 weeks and then turn the lights on. I really would like to keep the mushrooms alive if at all possible. Anyone have any suggestions Thanks in advance |

I've never had mushrooms on my live rock when starting a new tank so I'm taking a guess. Mushrooms are hardy, but I don't think they will take a cycle (at least a major one). Can you introduce the rock with the mushrooms after your tank has gone through the initial cycle, or are they on a majority of you live rock? If they are only on a couple of the rocks keep them in their current tank until after the cycle, your tank probably will not cycle a second time when you introduce them later.

If so and your ammonia and nitrate levels are zero then that live rock is okay to put in the display tank and probably won't cause any cycling. The mushrooms will be fine too if there has not been an ammonia spike in the tub where the live rock has been.

The water in the cooler with the rocks has stayed between 74-76 deg. The water I have in my mixing container (20) gals has not had a heater or powerhead in it. I haven't gotten my test kit in yet to fully test the parameters, but the SG in both are around 1.024
