y0- New to the hobby!

Hey everyone- I'm TryP from New York City- (Manhattan)

I'm new to the hobby/forum- a friend of mine is a big reefer so I caught the bug! Wanted to say hello to everyone over here-
I got a Nano 24DX - Cured a bunch of live rock in a bucket for a month then went to town upgrading the tank-

Figured might as well make some mods before I start so I could keep more interesting livestock- I upgraded the hood with a DIY kit from www.nanotuners.com - they said it's supposed to be very simple- it was a trail of tears. but I got through it- added more moonlights and 2 more lights- additonal ballast etc- Couldn't have done it without a dremel- had to shave down an endcap to get the splash cover back on! that wasn't cool-

also picked up a sapphire aquatics skimmer and a Vortec MP20! hurt the pocket but quality gear- I think the adjustment thing on the skimmer is pretty useless, but I probably just don't know how to use it-

anyway about 2 weeks ago started with an electric blue hermit, 6 astrea snails, a small button polyp colony and a 5 star polyp colony- they were doing very well and I didn't have any crazy algae outbreaks so I added live sand yesterday- today I went to http://www.absolutelyfish.com/
They have a GREAT selection and cool employees- I got a bunch of stuff and officially started the tank!

after almost 2 months of prep and cure (I was travelling alot so didn't want to rush into starting the tank)
I finally got my fish- I started wtih a misbarred black ocellaris- I named him Gino- he's cool- and I took the plunge and got a Helfrichi! Very expensive but he's no joke- I named him Nino-

I also got 2 nassarius snails today, 10 tiny blue hermits. and a cleaner shrimp- also picked up a blue button polyp colony (hurt the pocket but the guys at the store gave me a good deal) and a single large candy cane coral type thing- looks like a cross between a mushroom and clam-

Hopefully all will go well- Nano runs a little hot even after fan upgrade- I'm hitting about 82 after lights on for 10 hours- at night drops down to 77- acceptable I think, but a little on the high side right?

I got my eye on a 6 line wrasse and an emerald crab next-
Soon I'll try and get some pics up- Thanks for reading all that if you took the time!

This is a cool community! great help in starting everything up!

-T

Welcome tryptal.

Your tank sounds cool already. Nano's are tiny but still can be quite fun and rewarding. They can feel a little unstable in the beginning but the parameters usually settle into a routine. Oh, and the mushroom/clam candy cane thing, my guess is its a meat coral or Scolymia or Cynarina.

hey! Thanks for the reply! Actually I just found online what that coral looks like: http://www.flickr.com/photos/17102609@N05/2498184405/
It looks like a cross between the 2 in that pic actually. 1 piece and it has a really cool reddish backing to it- about 3.5" diameter- it's wasn't mounted to a rock that I could tell though- It seemed as though the hard red back was a part of the coral?
