187 Gallons of FUN!

It's time to start my tank build thread. While not an avid poster I have been a member of RC a couple of years. I have spent my time hear gaining valuable insight to reefkeeping in general and specific toward large tanks so here we go.

The tank is 187 gallon made by Leemar, the dimensions are 60x30x24. I am getting the tank through Charlie over at Charlie's fishtank factory (thanx Jess), it has a trapezoid overflow on one end of the tank with (2) 1' holes for returns and (2) 1 1/2' holes for drains.

I will use voretchs and maybe a OM Super Squirt for flow and a Reef Keeper Elite to handle monitoring and automation. Lighting will be between 2 to 3 Reeflux or Radium 4k bulbs on IC MH ballast with lumen bright or lumen max reflectors, supplemented by VHO actinics with a IC 660 ballast.

Here is a pic of the tank, she arrived today in Lakewood, California and the stand should be completed this weekend and then I can pick her up and bring her home.

Strange.. that doesn't look like 5ft.. I am getting a quote for a similar dimension tank, but I am going deeper than taller... 60x36x20, 187G as well. Excited to see it unwrapped an on a stand!

I thought the same when I saw the picture but I was assured that the dimensions all match.

Man, a 60x36x20... That is an awesome size tank. That was my last tank I had to sell off. Sad times, lol. (I did get a mini version of it, a 36x36x20).

Yea, hopefully the price quote comes back reasonable. Might see another 187G build thread.

Is this tank going to replace your 100G tank? or become a 2nd tank in the house?

Nice tank size, why didn't you go with a eurobrace?

very nice tank, but one of the hole in the overflow looks like it has a crack, the crossbraces are going to be a pain later on, they block light and get a lot of salt creep, believe me i know i have something similar and have to clean them, love the dimensions, when and if i upgrade i will get something like yours but with eurobracing.....good luck

sana

Reef211 no eurobracing because it will have a canopy on the tank and I didn't want to pay the extra cost.

Sanabbabit I am checking into the crack already and should know he end of toady on whether or not it is really a crack or something on the pallet.

Might be silicone instead of a crack??? Just a thought. If it's a crack, get it taken care of ASAP (new tank). Killer dimensions. This may be a silly question but is it going to be set up as a peninsula? (viewable from 3 sides?) either way, my next tank will definitely be 3 feet front to back. The depth of viewing will be crazy. Looking forward to the rest of this build. Keep the pics coming!!!

Alright the fun begins. I will be picking up the tank this Saturday (yea me!!!!) so tomorrow (Monday) I will begin tearing down the 100 gallon. I will take some of my corals to a LFS for store credit and the rest I will place in 20 gallon inside the closet in my home office. I will then bleach every piece of rock that I have over a 3 day process and, meticulously clean any and all pumps, heaters etc that I will use on the new tank. Wish me luck.

P.S. I have the vendor leak testing the tank for me to save some time and effort.

Ok I have it home-whew that was a task-pics to come shortly. It is much bigger than I expected. Also my wife wants pendants now instead of a canopy, not sure I want to go that route though.
