Iwasaki 150W PAR36 6500K or 20000K Lamp
http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issu...004/review.htm
http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2006...earchterm=None Why do you think these bulbs really never took off? ( double-ended metal halide bulb built into a mogul-based reflector ) Great PAR. 2 year bulb life. I've been looking at these on clearance but am scared that if i do buy one, i may not be able to get a bulb a few years down the road. This just seems like the way to do metal halide bulbs to me. |

I haven't used them. I nearly bought one a while back but didn't, for the same reason you haven't.
I think they are a great idea, but suspect bulb replacement would get costly down the road. IIRC, the bulbs were like $100 compared to the $60 you can pay for a lot of other high quality 150W DE bulbs. Over the course of a couple of years, the money adds up. The cost of a good DE reflector that "never" needs to be replaced probably outweighs the cost of the lamps.

Iwasaki Par 36
I've have this bulb set up with the IceCap Pendant and IceCap Electronic Ballast and I couldn't be happier.
This is a superior quality product. I can touch this fixture when on and not burn myself. Heavy stainless steel to dissipate the heat. Electronic ballast, no fans to wear out, no noise and very attractive. Yeah the bulbs may seem expensive but they are rated for 6000 hrs and I'll switch mine out a 3000hrs (one year). This fixture will out last all others I can think of and I get new reflectors at every bulb change. Oh and to replace the bulb I simply screw it in. No UV lenses to remove or to weekly clean. All for just $40 dollars more a bulb per year. For me this fixture is a bargain. PS Note in the review the superior par output on these bulbs. The spotlight properties of this bulb works well. I have less light spillage outside the tank. Last edited by Nanoized; 09/03/2009 at 09:18 PM. |

Where are you getting the bulbs? It seems only a few retailers carry them and that they seem to have them on clearance? Are they still being made by Iwasaki? Also, there was rumor of a 10k in the works but I've never seen one to date? Thanks Tim

You may have to connect with Iwasaki's U.S. Distributor.
I can get them here in Canada thru a relative. |

I checked with the manufacturer Iwasaki and they are not going to be discontinuing them any time soon. I believe that IceCaps quit making the par pendant, checking on that.

Yeah I know the pendant was discontinued.
If the bulbs will be available then its really your decision. All I can add is that I really like my fixture and have no plans to change it. Best of luck with your decision. |
