how does this sound

I am trying hard to design my sump for the tank we are planing. The tank will be 38"l x 24"d by 20"h with 1.5" drain and 1" return based on miracles sujestion. The sump I am planing will be 30"x16"x15"h. I am using the octo extreme 200 for my skimmer that needs a 13.5 x 11.5 footprint. I was thinking of going with 12" skimmer/intake, bubble trap with standard 1" spacing between each baffle, 9 " return , and 6"fug obviously with allowence for the baffle thickness. How does this sound? I will be using an eheim 1262 for the return pump.

IMO you will not get much value from a six inch fuge. Do you need a 9 inch return.

see thats what I wasn't sure from what I understood it was better to have a larger return area

True dat: The larger the return area the better. The return area stores your reserve water (as water evaporated only this section drops) -> the bigger it is, the less likely your return pump will be pulling air if you're slow to add RO or if your auto topoff malfunctions. Although it is prime space, I also agree w/ putting your skimmer in-sump. Maximize your sump size (take every free inch of available space). One other option: do you have room to add a small separate tank above the sump to use as a 'fuge; you could T off your return to partially feed this tank and have it overflow back into sump. Or just go with your current plan (6" of fuge IS better than nothing - an very cool to incorporate: many small critters will evolve in this space which is free of predation [don't add any crabs to this section]) Overall, you're definitely on the right track. 2 cents.
