phosphate questions
i just took a water sample to my lfs and had them test my water. they said my phosphates were at .6 he said anything below .1 is ok. so just how bad is .6? they sold me some gfo for 20 bucks a pound and told me to use about a third of the bag the first week and then change it out. i perform regular water changes and everything else seems to be in check. anything else i can do?

just get a reactor and run GFO from bulkreefsupply.com and it will drop down with no problem.

What you feed and how much you feed can cause big water problems. Just my 2 cents

0.03 ppm is a good normal range.
Are you saying... 0.06 ??? or 0.6. Here is a great article on reef parameters..Its a must read. http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2004-05/rhf/index.php

There are many ways to reduce phosphate. GFO is one of them, and a fine one at that, but is expensive and many folks use other ways. I dose organic carbon (vinegar and vodka) to drive bacterial growth that consumes nutrients, and I use a skimmer and grow macroalgae.
This has more: Phosphate and the Reef Aquarium http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-09/rhf/index.php This has more on GFO: Iron Oxide Hydroxide (GFO) Phosphate Binders http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2004-11/rhf/index.htm And these may help: The “How To” Guide to Reef Aquarium Chemistry for Beginners, Part 1: The Salt Water Itself http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2007-03/rhf/index.php The “How To” Guide to Reef Aquarium Chemistry for Beginners, Part 2: What Chemicals Must be Supplemented http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2007-04/rhf/index.php The "How To" Guide to Reef Aquarium Chemistry for Beginners, Part 3: pH http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2007-05/rhf/index.php The “How To” Guide to Reef Aquarium Chemistry for Beginners, Part 4: What Chemicals May Detrimentally Accumulate http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2007-09/rhf/index.php

I use basically the same method Randy does, except I dose glucose and vitamin C as my carbon sources, and I use macroalgae in a refugium.
I manage to keep my phosphates below the levels detectable by the Seachem phosphate kit, but we really don't know exactly what that means, as phosphate at 0.03 is tricky to detect. 0.6ppm phosphate is not good in your reef tank. Lots of algae problems can happen, and it also will seriously inhibit the calcification of any SPS and possibly LPS corals in your tank.

i started the gfo yesterday. i just put it in a media bag in the sump because i dont have room for a reactor under the tank. i was thinking of running a fluvel canister filter with carbon and gfo in it. and thats rite i said o.6. i notticed some sps having some issues and even some lps. i kind of thought it might be a phosphate issue because i never tested for phosphates. i havent had an algea problem in quite some time so i didnt think i had a problem, guess i was wrong
