Ok folks, what is it??

Ok, so I have been out of the hobby for a few years because I had to move. In that I bought a real rough fixer upper and had all my stuff sitting for a while with almost no care.

I finally have time to start getting the tank back to former glory. Still trying to get the sucker balanced out.

Anyway, these things started popping out of a live rock. Any ideas? Good? Bad?

wow i noticed a small bright green thing coming out of the bottom of a peice of live rock a few months ago and never knew what it was. Looks like this could be the same thing, ill be following.

Looks like some kind of macro algae, or even a marine plant sprouting. Give it a bit of time and it should reveal itself a bit more.

I am not positive of the name, but google halimida(sp?) it is a macro algae and is not really a problem. I still would prune it by hand to get rid of it as it does/will spread. It also consumes Calcium like mad

Check out Neomeris annulata. I think that is your beast. Harmless, but does like the Ca.

I have a little bit sprouting up in one of my tanks again too, pc from yesterday. You can see a little stalk of it right next to the bubble algae. I usually just pluck it out when I see it.

The tank water was not that bad, but I did not think it was good enough to grow this things. Guess it was not as bad as I thought, except for the ungodly growth of hair algae.

I had some of that in my first tank and I thought it was cool to see something growing from the new live rock. Unfortunately my emerald crabs thought it was cool also and ate it!

Thats interesting to hear. I just added some emeralds to the tank, so it will be interesting to see if they will eat it. I hope they do.

i've been fighting these things as well, they can become quite unsightly when they grow in large numbers. a friend who has had an established tank for years said they are a sign of a healthy tank and will eventually go away. his went away shortly after he swapped out his sandbed. for myself, i pulled out all the rock in my tank, carved away the bases of small sprouts and threw out rocks that were overgrown.

I've seen the pics of a few neomeris pest tanks. it can happen.

for me, i see one or two every now and then, so they are ok in my system. but you have to watch any algae if it looks like it is gaining serious momentum. they just want to take over the world.

those cute little 1/4"-1/2" fans, or ginko leaf looking things also can be a pest(for me they are).

I had some in my tank as well. I thought that they were cool looking. They went away on their own after a couple of months. Too bad.

just get it out of there, IME it dies out over time, but if it gets to big i use a razor and cut at the root, they usually dont grow back, good luck
