probably, usually okay. some species may prey on corals, but most are probably harmless and actual eat algae and detritus

I will follow suit with the ID. I had a bunch in my tank that where actually eating the coraline algae. I had to get a Harlequin shrimp to take care of the problem. But after the asterinas are gone, you have to feed the Harlequin shrimp and that can be controversial on how you do it. It looks like you do not have to do that right know unless they multiply a bunch.

I have several in my 75g tank that have reproduced to about 10 now. Overall they do not seem to bother any of my corals. I keep a close watch on them, so I say let them live unless you find some concrete reason to remove them.

Most of the time, they're harmless cleanup crew members. I'd keep it.

with these little guys I would have to disagree with you on keeping them in your tank. They EAT coralline algae. I acquired a new resident to my nano to "help" the population reach zero, thanks to my Harlequin shrimp. I take a handful a week from my buddies heavy populated 55 gallon.

Some will eat coralline, but I had many for years and they didn't touch the stuff. I had to get a tuxedo urchin to get rid of the bilious purple.
