What kind of snail?

This snail came in with my GARF Grunge that I ordered when I set my tank up several months ago. It has grown 3-4x. I have seen it burrow in the CC. Does anyone know what it is??

I can't remember the name off hand. But I've seen these on the coast of Florida. What is it eating? I believe this species will eat everything.

You may want to move it to your refugium (if you have one) until you positively identify it... I had "mystery snail" in my tank that turned out to be a whelk... It absolutely decimated my helpful snail population...

that shape makes me think whelk too. i am not really up on snail id, but lets put it this way: whelks are that shape, and they are basically predators. that is possibly a whelk vs a "turbo snail shaped" hitcher or whatever

Yeah, I was thinking whelk too...but surprised that he hasn't destroyed anything else (that I know of). Do Whelks burrow? I have a sump so I'll throw him in there. Any idea who I can contact to find out what he is?
Thanks!

Tulip, nice call, but most likely banded tulip F. lilium

Not to get off track, but how do you like your GARF grunge?

Well... the whole idea of GARF grunge was to prevent adding anything predatory into your tank, i.e. make your own live rock, etc. I am disappointed that this snail came in with the grunge. Plus, it was very, very expensive to do, the service wasn't great and 1/2 of the batch of corals that I got in were not attached well and floated off, dying. All in all it wasn't a great experience, but I was trying to "go green" and not introduce any wild-caught corals into my tank. I think I've given up on that thought!

Wow! You guys are great. Yes, this is a banded Tulip--I found it on Wiki and it looks just like it. Next time I see him, I'll throw him in the sump. I thought that all my snails died because I overpopulated the tank...but it sounds like this guy is the culprit! Thanks again!
