FO vs FOWLR
Need a little newbie help, please! When comparing an FO vs FOWLR set up, what would be some of the biggest advantages/disadvantages for each.
It seems from the info I've gathered, the FOWLR set up seems to be the most logical route for someone just getting into this hobby. Is that a correct assumption? Thanks.... |

It depends on what you want to keep and how you want your tank to look.
When you say FO do you mean nothing in the tank except fish and clean up crew or fake corals as structure? Both are going to need pretty much the same equipment. |

Live rock is a major portion of your filtration. The benefits of the live rock come from all the critters that are inhabitants of nooks and crannies of the rock. Even a small amount of rock is more beneficial than no rock.
IMO live rock is much more esthetically pleasing as well. Dead coral is exactly that...DEAD!

live rock will take care of the bulk of your biological filtration. You won't need bioballs in your sump so you'll have more space for a skimmer or refugium. Transitioning from fowlr to reef is easier as well

Ok so it would be more along the lines of FOWLR unless you are using resin rock. Even if you put dead/dry rock in it will become live over time.
Do you have ideas as to what you are interested in keeping? Do you have experience including freshwater? |
