Is this a good List?
Hey everyone, im new to the hobby and will be placing an order for most
of my supplies within the next week or so. Just a heads up i have done my fair share of research and i "think" i know as much as i need to lol. The DT will be a 90 gallon (48"L, 18"W, 24"H) and im going to have a Sump/Refugium probably 30 - 35 gallon (which i think is a good size....right? lol). The tank will consist of live rock, live sand, fish, and eventually down the road i hope to start getting anenomes. but no corals. I have gone online to www.thatpetplace.com (I read they were a good online retailer) and made up a sample shopping cart of what i think i need (I think i have everything) keep in mind there are some things like plumbing, food, buckets etc. that are not on the list for obvious reasons. The aquarium and sump are also not on this list. Basically what im asking is if someone could read over this list and tell me what im missing, if the items are good and what to improve on. Marineland Double Bright LED Light 48 in. x2 $129.99 $259.98 Fiji Live Rock - Sold by the pound 90lbs $449.10 Aragonite Natural White live Reef Sand 20lbs x2 $24.99 $49.98 Eheim 1250 Water Pump $99.99 $99.99 Koralia Evolution 1050 gph - x2 $44.99 $89.98 Battery Operated Digital $8.99 $8.99 Instant Ocean Hydrometer $7.19 $7.19 Reef Lab Multi Test Kit $39.99 $39.99 Reef Crystals Reef Salt 200 Gallon box $49.99 $49.99 Pure-Flo II RO Unit - TFC - 2 Canister - 50 gpd $126.99 $126.99 Seaclone Protein Skimmer 150 - 25 in. high $108.99 $108.99 Jager Aquarium Heater 250W 106-150g $25.99 $25.99 Ultimate Aquarium Gravel Vac 25 ft. Boxed Kit $28.99 $28.99 Any and all feed back would be great (Some stuff like that water pump i think i might change or not depending on what you think) Again this shopping cart is from www.thatpetplace.com Thanks again |

I'd get an RO/DI not an RO, there are a few sponsors here who sell nice units. Also check with any local clubs or Marine Aquarium Societies for used equipment and live rock, you can find great deals. Ditch the hydrometer and get a nice refractometer, the hydrometers are notoriously inaccurate. Also ditch the skimmer, there is alot of info on this site about nice skimmers, you can find much better. Good choice on the pumps

The powerheads and the eheim are good choices, I don't have any experience with that skimmer, but I sure hated the sea clone when I had one. Octopus makes good hang on the back skimmers, but if you're gonna have a sump/fuge why not get an in sump version, you'll have far better choices. Octopus, msx, euro-reef, vertex are all good choices.

There is also a huge "for sale" section here you'll see once you reach 50 posts.
Good luck with everything |

When it comes to a build this big, it gets exspensive fast. Shop around for all of your supplies. Look for sites that are have sales. Marinedepot.com has pumps on sale right now. fosterandsmithaquatics.com also has go deals a lot of the time. Look at the sponser page for ideas on a place to get a ro/di and other supplies.
Depending on what your ideas are for the bottom, I would use at least 70 lbs of sand. With just 40 lbs and the power heads, you will see the glass when they blow the sand around. You can also buy dry sand/aragonte and seed it with a little bit of live sand. The live rock will also help seed it too. You'll find that the gravel vac sucks out a lot of the sand when you use it. I stay away but some people use them. Sea clone is crap. I've ran them before and have two of them in the garage collecting dust. The protien skimmer is the heart of the filtrations for salt water aquariums. This is one area you don't want to skimp in. Good luck. |

few suggestions
get a refractometer instead of a hydrometer, they are pretty inaccurate I would get a different skimmer one 20lb bag of live sand would be enough, get the rest just dry aragonite Will want DI in addition to RO |

you could just get regular dry aragonite and then ask around in your local club for someone to sell/give you a cup of their sand to seed yours

I would agree with the suggestions made so far. Just a couple other thoughts on the smaller items.
I have also not seen too many people using the Reef Lab test kits. I think if you were going to buy a whole set of kits I would go with API. That is just my experience though. You might also consider a back up heater for redundancy. If the one you have goes, it is pretty cheap insurance in the big picture. |
