Live Mysis locally for a fuge?
When I was hanging out with Kataro at Reef Culture a few days ago giving him some cheato we started dsicussing the fuge, and ecosystems, pods, etc, etc he brought up that mysis will also grow in a reef tank in a fuge. I didn't know that as for some retarded reason I thought mysis was similar to cyclops and other things grown in cold water and just frozen for a easy to grow food soruce.
Anyway, so since I *can* have them growing as part of my micro-eco-system and they will live happily ever after in my fuge and general system, who sells them live locally that are 'reef' mysis so I know they will populate my fuge? Or does someone have a live culture going that I could get some macro or however to bring some home and populate? I love microlife and microecosystems and want as many itty bitty critters as possible unless they are a pest that destroys corals or messes something up.. Troy 'frreeeeeezzzzzyyyyyy' |

You may already have some in your tank right now, they are very small shrimp and are out mostly at night. They have spawned a few times in my tank. If you are looking for live mysis locally i know that Amazon has them. They are on 43rd ave and thunderbird. I think its like 3 dollars for a "portion" which ends up being a ton of shrimp!
note: I just bought some at Amazon a week ago, turned out great for a treat for my tank!

No one sells them locally....but you can get them cheap at aquaculturestore dot com. They will live in a fuge ok...but your gonna have to feed them occcasionally....just flake food or something easy...but they are carnivores and will need to be fed....

Welll being I only have a 14G cube that has been bastardized and frankenstiened so much prior to me even owning it, let alone after, so I culd turn the first chamber into the fuge, they would have lots of food available from me target feeding corals at night and othes during the light hours.
Smandascott or anyone else: anything closer? Tempe? Or someone with tons and tons of them can I get a tiny portion of fuge green goop? HJow big do they get so I can try to hunt for them at ngiht with a flashlight, and are they free swiimmers or hoppers like sexy shrimp? |

Hehe as long as we are both in tight spots for money I wont worry about it as much!
No worrying about putting you in a worse spot over a silly 20 bucks! Few weeks, I'm starting my savings now. haha. =( man I'm poor. |

I have some in my tank that come out at night. But without actually making a tank for them there's no way I could get them out. They are very fast and usually hang out in the little holes in the live rock.

Mysids are highly cannibalistic, they usually start eating each other in less than 24 hours from a feeding. We had an entire colony crash because we missed a feeding.

WOW!! Thats good to know. Not good when your food eats itself! LOL... I know for a fact that Amazon on 43rd ave only sells live BRINE SHRIMP. I buy there every 2 weeks. Shipments come in every other friday.

I figured you were talking about brine shrimp... Lol..
If you give the mysis plenty of hiding spots and feed them regularly, you should be able to keep a little population.... |
