Vortechs or Tunze for Cross Flow

I have a 265 SPS reef that currently has two 6105 and two 6045 (non-controllable) for flow. I am considering adding two more pumps to the back of the tank to push water towards the front and perpendicular to the 6105. Which would be better for this Tunze 6055 or mp10ES? I know the 6055 can be swiveled to just about any direction but can the mp10 be changed?

Mp10 can't be swiveled, but the flow is very broad. IMO you get the BEST out of your mp10 if they are in sync with other larger vortechs though.

mp10 is set and cannot be swiveled, but it will produce a broader flow near the pump. The tunze will be more narrow towards a certain spot and produce good flow as well. (this is just my interpretation of the huge Tunze v Vortech ordeal thats been going on, and I think this was the general consensus of that debate, provided with the die tests that were used)

If you've already gotten 4 tunzes, why not grab some cheaper koralias to supplement flow back there. It sounds like you dont need much

I am leaning toward a controllable pump that can be dialed back should the flow be too much. Might go with the 6055 as I can run them off the 7095 controller I already have. Thanks for the info.

True, like mentioned above the vortech would be more efficient for you if you had other vortech products, but it would definitely make more sense to go with the Tunze because you have the ability to control it

If I was going to put a Tunze on my back wall I would look at the new 6095 as its pretty broad like the vortech and will cover much more area. They changed the diameter on the flow nozzle to be much more like the 6105 rather than a nanostream. Otherwise go with the real MC Coy and grab the MP10 either way you will be happy. I am just not a fan of cords in my tanks so I like the latter of the two but I might try Tunzes newest brain child; the 6095.

Don't forget the mp10's don't stick well to glass thicker than 3/8. Sometimes they do if you support the motor side well. And sometimes the wet side will start spinning. And other people have no problems. Just sayin.

IME the best thing you or any reefer could do to get better flow is either buy or make a devise to rotate your propeller pump inside the tank.

I.e., the newly shown at Macna Sea Sweep by Sea Swirl or the improved Wavy Seas now sold as the Vertex Mocean.

Most Prop pumps put out plenty of flow its just not getting everywhere and this is where having a rotation device really makes a difference.

Also, if you can afford it, a Wavebox in conjunction with some prop pumps also does a great job of getting some flow everywhere and debris suspended for removal by the drains.

I wish they would start looking into making powerheads/pumps smaller. Im (like many) very big on keeping my tank clean on the inside and the outside, from the pics it looks like the Vertex is huge. Im not saying it doesnt do its job but aesthetics must be taken into account...The Vortechs have the right idea, but more can be done to get these things smaller

How thick is your tank? At 265g i'm asuming it is at 3/4" thick. MP10es only work up to 5/8" thickness glass so be carefull.

The glass is nearly 3/4" thick and I have read that the mp10 have trouble holding at this size. Any body have any idea where I can find the 6095? Does the Mocean use the returns from the main pump or does it rotate a powerhead within the tank? Will have to do a bit more research before I make a purchase.

You can't yet . Its due out the end of this month. I would call larger retailers like AquaCave or Marine Deopt to see if you can pre order it.

Mattiej,

The MoCean can rotate the return line or with a tunze bracket rotate a tunze. I don't know if it can do both at the same time.
