My opinion is, don't buy live rock. It's a waste of money. You can save money buy buying dead rock, and putting in your tank when it's cycling. The rock will become alive then.

You will go broke buying 90# of fully cured LR. I would go with dead rock & maybe 15# of live rock to seed it. I bought Manado from Premium Aquatics & love it.

you cant buy cured live rock online, it will always have some die off during shipping and will need to cycle once in place.
with that being said, as everyone esle has already said, its much cheaper to buy dead dry rock, either online or locally, then seed it with a bit of live rock, and the best place to buy live rock is locally from other reefers who are getting out of the hobby. get a few pound for super cheap. |

thx for the replies guys, i am getting confused about something. I realize it may be expensive, but shouldn't the rock be "live" to seed the boilogical filtration of the tank? My plan was to have 80-100 lbs of live rock. If i go with , say, 50 lbs of dead rock, and 50 lbs of live - havent I cut the potential of biological filtratrion of my tank in half?

The dead rock will eventually become live.

Anything that has been shipped will have considerable die-off, as has been mentioned. If you use dry rock, it gets seeded environmentally (these bacteria are virtually everywhere). The only time (IMO) to use live rock is if you have an LFS nearby, and you need only a small amount.

If you want to buy "cured" LR, you are not understanding cycling and related issues, and are not in firm footing in this hobby.
What motivate you to seek "cured" LR? |

to me, buying cured live rock is more ideal if you dont have a place to cure the live rock other than your tank, and you live in an apartment. doesnt the curing process smell terrible, or is it manageable?
Im setting up a tank and figure ill buy 80% LFS cure live rock and add about 20% uncured live rock, and hope that reduces cycling/smell |

I also bought manado from premium aquatics to seed my base rock. It is very nice rock without any hitchhikers so you don't have to worry about pests in your tank.

what if you want the hitchhikers (good guys)? is it just better to seed it later by buying the cleanup crews later or try to get them with uncured LR?

It's a toss up. For every cool feather duster or harmless worm you get, you're running the risk of introducing harmful things like the nasty type of bristles and aptasia. Once you get that stuff it's really hard to get rid of. My first tank was live rock, but this time I'm going dry rock, just for that reason.

If you have some extra money, this is the way to go. I personally think it's a good investment for the tank. They have the best looking live rock I've seen. Lots of cool critters that come with it. You could buy base rock and a few good pieces of live rock to seed it through them as well. It just takes time to spread. There is a "cycle" but it's minimal if you keep up with your husbandry. If it smells bad, then you aren't doing it right. I think that is just good advice, period.

And if you live close to tampa like I do then no shipping charges because you can go pick it up! Payed 5$ per lb for live rock. Hundred times better then the live rock in LFS's that are 6-7$ per lb!. Just be careful because there is always a chance you can get something you do not want to have in your tank. Just think of it like opening up a pack of pokemon cards, like when you were a kid, you can get crappy cards or a holographic charzard card haha.
My friend bought 30lbs and got a pygmy octopus hitchhiker that has a great little 25G circus home.

Tampa Bay Saltwater! I just picked up my 1st "part" and have only gotten one bad pest so far. But it came LOADED with feather dusters, a pistol shrimp, all kinds of sponges and a lot more I haven't discovered yet. I can't wait to go down again next week and get the last part.
Richard is the best by the way. Excellent customer service and amazing product. I was extremely worried about the money until i saw the product and it has been the best decision I have made so far!

Using dead rock is cheaper. but that's about it. BUY as much quality live rock that you can afford, you will start your tank with a greater biodiversity of life. This will help the tank cycle faster and create a more natural environment for your fish and corals. If you purchase dead rock it will become live rock with bacteria eventually, but their is so much more to live rock than just the nitrifying bacteria you need to cycle a tank. The sponges, gorgonians, corals, feather dusters, etc. that come with high quality live rock is much more important for the long term stability of a reef tank and all these organism will not come with dead rock. It will cost less in the short term to use dead rock but in the long term it will be cheaper and your tank will look a lot better for it.
