Cool Bak Pak 2 as Refugium

As many know the Bak Pak 2 has a side with Bio Bale in the return side. I was wanting to take the bio bale out and turn the side in a refugium with Chaeto and copipods. Has anyone done this, will it work, does anyone see a problem with this.

Thanks for ideas and suggestions.

The only problem i see is that the chaeto needs light to survive, and it will start to grow, and will obstruct the water flow causing the skimmer sides to overflow, and since its a hang on back it will spill water outside your tank

Agreed. I wouldn't risk it. Why not use an Aquaclear (now FLuval) hang on back filter instead. You can purchase a clip on light for it.

I have used a Bak Pak before and would never recommend using the bio bale. I always end up tossing that stuff since it is nothing more than a source of nitrates. Like others, not sure if growing cheto in there would be wise. You could easy enough I believe though by adding a in-tank media in/water light. No different than say adding that to the back of a tank like the Bio Cubes, etc.

But I'd recommend removing the bio bale if you haven't already.
