Question cheap Rochester area granite?

So, we're thinking of maybe doing a granite top for our upcoming stand build, but it's got to be relatively cheap ($150 max). I know, cheap would be to not do a granite top, but to make it out of plywood...

There's a guy on Craigslist that probably has some good stuff for just $7/sq foot. We don't need a big piece, since the top is going to be about 48"x18". Only problem is, it will probably need to be cut and finished, so that brings me to my question...

The guy they referred me to charges $75 for pickup, and $25 per cut and $25 per edge needing to be polished. So, worst case, 2 cuts and 3 edge polishes and the ~$50 piece of granite is now up to $250 or more, which is more than we wanted to spend. Not that I think the prices are that unreasonable, but I'm just wondering if there's a place that has cheap remnants *and* can handle the cutting/polishing, so then I would save the pickup charge, plus maybe some of the processing costs as well.

Anyone have any recommendations of places in Rochester that I might want to check out?

Thanks!

Give Bargain Outlet a look. We bought a granite top there for a kitchen island I built on the cheap.

Here's an example of what's available at the Henrietta store: http://www.bargain-outlets.com/gbo-det.php?sku=5017039

It's probably longer than you need, but might give you some other possibilities.

We bought some remnant pieces at Northern American Stone on Ridge Rd. We were able to pick the remnant and tell him where to cut. They were fantastic compared to others we checked out. I think the price per sq ft was $40 which included the cuts. We were very happy.

I have been building kitchens for years. Usually granite and cheap are not used in the same sentence, hope you find what you are looking for.

I agree. We built a small second kitchen in our prior house for my inlaws. What we did there was to buy 12x12 granite tile. We did a small grout line with darker grout. You could do something like that with a fish tank stand and optimally only use granite tile where the tank does not cover the top. Then cap off the sides of the top with oak molding. I would think that would look pretty nice and it would be far cheaper.

Lol, yeah, that's about what I'm learning. Oh well, figured it was worth a shot!

Thanks ggdowski, that's definitely something to think about!

Thanks block head, that's another good idea. I'll make some calls tomorrow and see if I can find anything.

It dawned on me that I did a similar top for an old sewing table base. In this case I used discontinued marble tile from Home Depot.

My wife dug up an old photo from that kitchen job. I remember being really happy with it. Then we moved.

Wow, thanks for the pics! The kitchen looks especially awesome! Fantastic work! That's a definite possibility...

Of course, I run significant risk if I show my wife the pics... She's been nagging me for years about doing a tile backsplash in our kitchen...

Thanks! I did have to chuckle. We had a great kitchen in Syracuse before we moved back to Rochester. Funny thing... My wife begged me to do the backsplash. So here it is... After we cleared out 3 Home Depot stores of discontinued 1" 12x12 tiles. Truth is. I had to do something for those fish tanks. Just like the first picture, we moved only 1yr after finishing that. Two moves in three years. I hope that trend ends.

Wow, that kitchen was beautiful! I'd hate to leave that, too. We've been in our house over 12 years, and I still don't want to think about having to move even after all that time...
