What kind of tanks go on sale? I'm guessing nothing too fancy like cubes or rimless...

It's always the stock tanks up to 55 gallons

Correct. It is your standard run of the mill 'rimmed' non drilled tank. I believe they are usually aqueon 10/20/29/40 and 55 gallon with a black trim around the bottom and top. The 40 breeder is nice and has great dimensions and seems to be the most popular. It makes an excellent QT tank or even a nice DT which you can drill yourself.

i picked up a 40g breeder.The ones at my petco (nj)are made by tetra and is tempered.

Only the bottom is tempered.

And any variation of those sizes is usually included in the sale. 20H or 20L or example.
