New 40G Tank

Well, I just recently started in the saltwater tank hobby. I have experience in freshwater so I do know some basics. I started with a 20H with 2 clowns, a candy apple zoa, gsp and a mushroom with hermits and a crab with some snails. everything is going great in the tank however, I had the urge to go bigger. So now I have the empty 40G waiting. However, I want to create a sump. The glass cannot be drilled into so I'm not entirely sure what to do just yet. So my question is, are sumps difficult to install and how? whats the best yet affordable lighting for a reef tank and what can I stock in the 40G?? Thanks everyone and sorry for the large post

Best and affordable lighting can be two totally different things. Sumps are relatively easy to install and as far as draining from a display to a sump without drilling there are hang on the back overflows that are out there to buy(or make if you are handy with acrylic). A quick search on here or on google will find more info than you probably want on sumps, their setup and benefits. What kind of corals would you like to keep? That will determine what kind of lighting you need and then you can look at price from there. Good luck and welcome to the wanting to go bigger syndrome...lol

They make hang on gravity drains from your display that will go straight down to your sump. From there you can add whatever you want into your sump (ie. skimmer, heaters or chillers, rock ect). From there you can put an in sump pump to deliver water back up. Be careful that your pump isn't pushing more water up than you can drain. Depending on your canopy or hanging height for the lights, I would use a 250 watt metal halide for the lights. If the canopy is close and there isn't much airflow, it will get warm; but small icecap fans will help that.

Well Im really interested in frogspawn and toadstool. Love those corals. Probably some zoas and there was this tree like coral I saw on youtube and I cant remember the name, but it looks great lol. While I'm on here, this weird looking creature is on my powerhead and was wondering if anyone knew what this was?

HEHE so you bought a 40g sump what kind of DT are you going to get LOL.

You can still do a sump without drilling. Drilling is better for a lot of reasons but people have been using HOB overflows for years successfully.

If you find more aptasia growing in your display, they make a liquid called aptasia x that comes with a little syringe, turn off all flow to the area and pinpoint cover them in that stuff. It's safe for the tank and melts them immediately

Alright! I'll invest in that. It was weird, I took the rock out of the tank and i couldn't see anything. Literally seconds after I put the rock back in, it shot right back out. Fortunately I only saw 2=)

Yeah, they curl up and are basically transparent when taken out of the water. The aptasia x is almost fun, it's like hunting in your living room.
