Calc reactor and dosing pump to control drip rate

I've read on here that some use a dosing pump to control the effluent drip rate on their calcium reactors. I understand why but is it absolutely necessary? I'm about to purchase a Geo Ca/rx and want to get some feedback if I also need to get one as well?

Thanks
Andy
