Will professional carpet cleaning harm the water chemistry
I am always very careful about any sort of spray cleaners in the room with the aquarium. Its an open top 125 gallon with an open sump underneath. I know that things floating in the air can and do get into the water and could even cause harm.
My wife wants to have the carpet professionally cleaned this week. Should I be concerned about this negatively affecting the aquarium? I have no idea what sort of cleaners they use, or if the chemicals even get in the air, since I have never had this done before. Any advice would be much appreciated. |

If they are just shampooing and rinsing with a Rug Doctor or something similar, I see no problem with that. But if they are going to do some spot treatment prior to shampooing, then I might see reason for concern.
I would suggest a friendly call in advance to see what they are planning to do and with which products. Then report back here with updated information. |

It is a "hot water extraction method", which basically means steam cleaning. There is a "specially formulated cleaning solution" mixed with the steam.
My guess is its a steam shampoo and rinse sort of deal. Should I be concerned about the cleaning solution being in the steam then, or is this not an issue? |

Bump. Perhaps a rephrasing.
How many people have their carpets cleaned professionally without any ill effects to the reef tank? |

turn off your skimmer!!! The air injection port will suck up and chemicals floating in the air. Almost lost my entire tank due to this.

Over the years, I've used my Hoover Steam Vac to death (really - it finally died after 25+ years of use). I've also had Master Clean/Stanley/etc come out about yearly to do the whole house. I've never had any problems at all.

Thanks for the responses guys. I will probably shut off the skimmer just to be safe, and I will not have them do any protection system which may contain more chemicals than the cleaning itself would.

Well, if you think it does any harm to fish, then you should think about it if it doesn't affect your health.

Seriously, bring up a six-and-a-half year old thread to add spam?
