Mode for a lonely MP40WQD?
Hey Reefers,
In your opinion, what is the best mode for a single MP40 to get the most randomized flow? (Extra important since it's only blowing in one direction!) Not just randomized but best in your opinion as well. I know it varies based on stocking etc. Let's say 40-65g mixed reef |

And do you think I should add a pump to the other side to mix it up (would just be a Koralia). I already plan on having a Koralia nano behind the rock work but it's only 240-420gph

I don't think you can get random flow with only one. It's going to establish a fixed flow pattern, then you only can control how fast or slow the water moves in that pattern. In order to set up varying flow patterns you need interference with the first pump, which is done with a second pump.

Reef crest/lagoon for a few days then nutrient transport mode for a day or two. If you don't want a second vortech (why not?) then get a power head and point it into the flow of the vortech to create chaotic flow.

I 100% want a 2nd vortech but I just paid $355 for a mp40wqd and don't really feel like purchasing another at the moment. Just makes me sick to my stomach haha. I am also only going to be running a 40-65g so 2 mp40s would be overkill even at like 30% haha. an mp-10 would be fine but I'm upgrading to a 90g in a year or 2 when I buy a house so will need 2 mp40s not 1 mp40 and one mp10. |

Do you guys think I should add a jebao wp10, jebao wp25, jebao rw4 or jebao rw8 as my pump on the other side? I know the mp40 is a ton of flow for a 40b or 50b or 65g but since I am turning it down I also want flow from the opposing side. I know I can't sync them up like 2 vortech but I can atleast create a back and forth by manually anti syncing the pumps ( I know it will eventually get out of wack and will have to recalibrate). I'm going for mixed reef, mostly lps with some sps

Look at the Buy/Sell forum and you can pick up some good deals on the used, older MP10wES pumps. I got one a week ago for $100 shipped.
EDIT: I just saw your join date. On second thought, try your local reef club section of the forum to see if anyone has any used vortechs or such.

Get a mp10 to offset the flow. I have a mp40 and mp10 on a 60 cube and its very nice.
