Finally a good pic of grumpy crab. ID?

Finally got a good pic of this guy.

He's very pretty, purple with striped legs.

He's decently big, about 1.5" across. He's also very reclusive. He sees me coming and pow, he's under a rock.

He's got the claws of a meat eater, so he is residing in my fuge with the rest of the misfits.

Any idea what he is? I'm thinking a purple shore crab.

Edit:

Just got a good pic of the back of him.

Tough call for me, but it looks like a young stone crab.

Did it come in with your LR? They are very common here in South Florida. I had one in my 45g refugium that lived under the Chaeto and got to be about 3" to 4" across his carapace at the shoulders.

yep.. stone crab... i got 2 of them with my TBS order.. he ate my starfish and basically anything else he could catch..I had 2 of them, moved them to their own aquarium.. 1 died recently though.. not sure why, i've been feeding them regularly.

After removing them I saw a ton of life coming out of the rocks, all sorts of things I didn't know I had.. they were all hiding from the stone crabs haha. (Even gorilla crabs were hiding, i thought they were all dead, nope, they are out and about now)..

That he is in your fuge is good, if there isn't anything you don't mind losing in there

I've got a sea hare and some hermits in there. I guess I need to set him up his own little system at some point. Eventually he will get too big for the fuge, and I can see him going grump all over some poor peaceful critter that winds up in there. The sea hare too actually, will probably get to big to let chill in the fuge.

Right now the hare is about 4" and the crab is about 1.5-2".

Time to pick up a couple new tanks.

Thought I would update this as I spied grumpy crab today in the sump.

Dude he's huge. He's grown at least triple the size since I first put him in there.

I'm convinced the sump is utopia for crabs. They hate other living things unless they can eat them, they love the dark, they love to pick at crap. They can do all that to their hearts content in the sump.

Lol

I might start harvesting his claws if he gets big enough!

I like him. He's a pretty cool character after watching him do his thing for a while tonight.

I've always wanted a "sump monster". If this thing gets big enough it will def qualify.

I call all those unknown crabs "Lawn Crabs". They do well on the lawn; that's their natural habitat.

Lol funny.

I would have made him a boiled crab, but he's happy down there and I don't think he's hurting anything. That is until he gets to be the size of my foot and starts wandering around the basement.
