Beckett Skimmers

Anybody out there still using Beckett skimmers? Why would you use a Beckett instead of a needle wheel skimmer? Anyone try pairing the new Sicce SDC 9.0 pump with a a Beckett skimmer?

I've started a big build. I will be using a Beckett skimmer. The harder you run it, ( more pressure) you give them the better. I have always gone by to 30 rule. 30 foot of head per Beckett. You can always throttle it back if needed. The #1 reason for Beckett it turn over rate. A needle wheel might be putting out 3-600gph but a Beckett can run way more. Normally once you hit 300g tanks and up, they will run Beckett.
#2 most don't look at this. Once your running 250g tanks and up. You don't care how much heat pumps put out. In fact hot running pumps saves. Why have 1500+ watts of heater running to add a cool running DC pump. Most are going cooler LEDs DC pumps than having to add a breaker load of heaters.
In all its for the amount of water processed and skimmed, adding to higher oxygen levels.

Reefing is'nt how long you been in it. It is how deep you get in it.

Current Tank Info: 400g display build, 300g sump, 75g ATO, 75g refug and a few more. Close to a 1000g. 200g mixing station.

Don’t think that pump will run a Beckett. You need a pressure rated pump for it like an Iwaki, panworld or something.
I loved my Beckett when I ran one.

Thanks for the posts! I'm definitely tempted to try one.

I ran a 30" tall Bashsea Twisted Skimmer (nice skimmer) with the Sicce SDC 9.0 and it was plenty of pump. These are very powerful DC pumps, but they are loud.

The Bashea is a modified Beckett, not quite the same. A guy local to me ran a becket with a hammerhead, 5000gph and it only worked minimal and was inconsistent at best. He switched out to an iwaki 100 which is way less flow but made for the back pressure and he skimmer is bow beasting on that tank.

I have run a Beckett skimmer since 2004. It is a MRC-1 powered by an old Gen X 40 pressure pump throttled back to about 700 gph. I have to clean the skimmer twice a week. The pump is loud however it is in the basement with the sump. As long as the skimmer's output is out of the water it rarely needs adjusting,

How is this a modified Beckett. When I go to the Bashsea site they call them a Beckett skimmer, not a modified. I’m not trying to start an argument, I am just trying to find out how this is different? Op sorry for derailing your thread.

Sorry for the confusion it was all on my end. A post abI’ve referred to it as one. I have no experience with the particular skimmer, I have ran Beckett skimmers in the past. I was only reciting what was said above me and saying that a Beckett skimmer requires a pressure rated pump. I should have clarified my post to indicate that thee aboveboard poster stated them as “modified”.

Sorry for The confusion.

Corey

Sounds like the Sicce 9.0 would work. I was thinking of pairing it with a Precision Marine Bullet 2 or 3. Any thoughts on a PM Bullet Skimmer?

Sorry I have never used a Precision Marine skimmer, so I cannot comment on them. I would imagine if you contact Precision Marine and tell them the pump you want to use they would tell you if it will work.
